Alger on panel to discuss Career and Life Outcomes of Former Student-Athletes
This comes across my desk today ... look who is on this panel!?!

GALLUP EVENT
Winning After Graduation: Understanding Career and Life Outcomes of Former Student-Athletes
Join Gallup and the NCAA on Wednesday, February 17, 2016, to discuss a study of former student-athletes as compared with other college graduates in five elements of well-being.
The event will include a panel discussion with leaders in higher education and college sports, with an introduction by NCAA President Mark A. Emmert, Ph.D.
Panel members include:
• Mark A. Emmert, Ph.D., President, NCAA
Jonathan R. Alger, President, James Madison University
• Sandy Barbour, Director of Athletics, Penn State University
• Kendall Spencer, Member, NCAA Division I Board of Directors and Chair, Division I Student-
Athlete Advisory Committee
Gallup Executive Director of Education and Workforce Development Brandon Busteed will present the results of the study.
Participants will leave with a better understanding of the research that Gallup conducted to measure life outcomes of former NCAA student-athletes. Educators, academic leaders, academic administrators, student-athletes, other students, thought leaders, policymakers and business leaders are encouraged to attend.
Winning After Graduation: Understanding Career and Life Outcomes of Former Student-Athletes takes place Wednesday, February 17, 2016, from 9:30-11:00 a.m.; registration and a light breakfast begin at 9:00 a.m.
The event takes place at The Gallup Building, 901 F Street NW, Washington, D.C. Please note that the entrance to The Gallup Building is on Ninth Street NW.
Registration is required. For more information, contact Krista Volzke at +1-402-938-6001.

There is no way the NCAA should let Alger no where near a panel/discussion/study with regard to NCAA athletics and student-athletes. This gives little to no credence to this panel discussion.

The NCAA doesn't want to pay athletes. Alger took the lead in penning a letter stating why universities shouldn't cover cost of attendance. Of course he would be a favorite of the NCAA.

Yep. They NCAA probably saw the great 8 Letter and decided that JMU had slightly more cache than Elon or Wofford.

I'm sure there will be "enlightened and thoughtful conversation" on this panel.

This guy makes me wish we still had Rose.
The BOV probably looks at this as a good thing- increases our national exposure.
Boo this man.

Sounds fine to me. This is non-threatening and straight forward. Hope they learn something insightful that will become, or lead to, something actionable or useful.

Yes, and...? Last time I checked that's what a university eduction is all about, and not pretending JMU is some kind of minor league farm system for the pros.

The only thing that's a "joke" is your comment.

Well, another joke is the fact that a professor cannot spell education. Silly TU grads!

RE: Alger on panel to discuss Career and Life Outcomes of Former Student-Athletes
This whole thing in itself isn't really a big deal to me. If he's on some committee that is never going to do anything actionable, which is what he does for a living, whatever. I just hope he's gone soon. He's just not good for JMU IMO. We really need someone who is going to do things aggressively and move the needle on the endowment and giving and that's just not happening at the pace it should be. I'm sure someone will bring up percentage increases that look good but it was so poor to begin with but a respectable percentage increase on an embarrassingly low number to begin with is not good enough. It's like getting a 20% increase in your annual raise at work when you make $20/hr.

It was pretty actionable when he shot down the sun belt. It was pretty actionable when he hired his "boy Friday" to be in charge of fund raising. He will be pretty actionable if he shoots down the coa. And looking at the bigger picture he is probably not going anywhere. Alger may have some shortcomings but ultimately he is kind of a nice guy. With a couple of exceptions most of the BOV don't see a move to FBS in quite the same way as most of this board. As long as publications continue to view JMU favorably, cowboy Jon is not going to be asked to leave. And here is the most bitter pill of all, in academia the dead weight never gets a better offer to go work somewhere else.
