I think it depends on how you use, or perceive the purpose of, this message board. For me, I'm remote from Williamsburg and rarely can make it to a game. Nobody else at my house gives a rip about Tribe sports. So when I'm watching a game (or listening, or whatever), this board is sort of like having some buddies sitting with you at the game. I have no problem if somebody says whatever they're thinking -- "So-and-so is really stinking up the joint tonight -- looks like he just doesn't care," or whatever. Of course that leaves the door open to say later "Wow, So-and-so has really turned it around in the second half."
I would hope that our players NEVER look at this board - or at least are smart enough to not care what any of us think (except BillyMac, of course). But even if they do, they certainly aren't doing so DURING the game. So I think we can say what we're thinking, the bad as well as the good.
Thank you,
BGR, for the nice compliment (
you are too kind...). I agree with you, mostly.
When I found the
CAAZone and now,
Tribe Talk, I was in heaven. Like
BGR, most people in my life could give a rip about W&M Sports. So, when I found a group that was as crazy to talk Tribe athletics as I was, my goodness, that was fantastic!
True story, I was so frustrated with the coverage of W&M Sports back in the 80's , that I changed jobs and went to work as a reporter/broadcaster, so I would know that W&M would at least get some basic coverage when
I was on the air. If there was
any news from W&M Sports, it was definitely going into my sportscast.
As for the
Message Board comments, I think, (
it's just my opinion) that generalities work better than specifics on boards, in general. We all, especially during away games (on TV), can get frustrated with certain aspects of the game, and comments such as "
they are a step slow on defense tonight" or "
they are having a problem getting locked in from three" are a
better way to express the frustration of
not being able to do a thing about it, than to say "
Player X couldn't guard his grandma" or
"Player Y couldn't throw a beachball in the ocean".
No one, player or just normal people, like to see things on social media that, basically, tears them down or insults them. It doesn't feel good. Everybody has a vulnerable spot. It's just human nature.
So, while this is an interesting topic, especially growing out of a
Game Thread, I would just say, if you are posting, write it, take a breath, reread it and then decide whether or not it could be expressed a little better. If so, go ahead.
Also, did I tell you how much I
love talking Tribe Sports here??!!
