Hakeem Baxter's dunk was a surprise to me.

Students had their own turnstile to go through back then.

I rarely went through a turnstile as a student

Don't question it LairDweller. I'm sure UAB hasn't had any history of issues with turnstile attendance in the past.

Honestly, you can think what you want. You like to question attendance to everything. That's your thing. Doesn't affect me at all. I'm just happy we got a win.

Weird

I think it was a surprise to everybody, maybe even to Hakeem...but it was a huge moment in the game

Dirk Williams didn't show much on the stat line, but he's showing a more complete game every time out. That stretching block was a thing of beauty.

Is this Norton's highest scoring game?

no. He had 26 against Charlotte last year. Looks like it's his second highest though.

Yep. We need this from him too. We can't have him in the game if all he is going to do is shoot. When he has an off night he is completely worthless when that's the case. He has definitely caught on quickly.

He made a move last night driving to the basket that was a thing of absolute beauty. Unfortunately he missed the lay in. He did have a pretty sick alley oop.

He got fouled on the lay up. Officials missed it.

Both of those were great plays. That fake behind the back pass might have been worthy of top plays if he had finished.

It was so smooth. He is playing at a very high level right now.

Puts to rest those people saying that classes being out is no excuse. When students are in town, they're showing up.

Are you telling me that all of UAB students live out of town and there are no more than 50-75 students are in The Birmingham Metro area during the holidays.

They show up when classes are in session. There is no excuse for the numbers when classes are not in session. There are enough Birmingham area students.

When you're living in the dorms it one thing to just round up some of your friends and go to the game.

When you're at home with the parents, you have to drive back downtown and none of your friends can go, etc.

It's not the same atmosphere.

I wonder if that's harder or easier than me wrangling a 2 year old and a 5 year old into going.

03-lmfao Gold.

The students are awesome, and I'm not blaming them for piss poor overall attendance, but Memphis Blazer is right about holiday games. The students could do better then. But so could the alumni and fans.

We should probably move on.

Yep. He is fun to watch. My new favorite player.

I agree on the weird vibe, though.

Everyone keeps saying there was a weird vibe, but I though we had a great vibe! The only problem was that the student section was huge and the rest of the arena was poor. That threw things out of whack. Maybe that's what you guys saw as weird?

It wasn't as loud as the UTEP game was at times, but that's partially because the game wasn't too close at the end. It was still a fun atmosphere and it was awesome having that many students there.

I'm really tired of analyzing attendance though. I want to go to games, bring as many people as I can, and have a blast. When I worry too much about how the crowd looks it detracts from the experience. Watching this team play is just plain fun! We definitely need to do a better job of spreading that message. Everybody I've taken to a game or given tickets to has had a great time.

I do think the one thing the impressive student attendance should tell us is that marketing works. What's the difference between 400 students at a game and 1500+? It's mostly just fantastic grassroots marketing by people like Courtney and Tim.

Whats aggravating is when I bought my tickets Wed night nearly every lower level seat was sold, I'm assuming most to season ticket holders. So why were there still a lot of empty lower level seats last night?

It's like that far too often. A large chunk of those are corporate tickets that are sparingly used.

I went back and watched the TV broadcast today. Both Coach Chris Walker and the other guy were very complimentary of the crowd, and it did look and sound pretty good on TV. Chris Walker was adamant about us being an at large team if we keep winning. I've enjoyed him calling our games this season.

I have been told that the athletic department is working on a solution to this situation.

The crowd DID look good on TV. You couldn't see the sparsely populated upper deck.

I think UAB IS an at large quality team. Unfortunately, our metrics don't reflect that. This is a really good team when they are firing on all cylinders.

We looked like we didn't take Rice very seriously. They controlled the tempo and style of the game the whole way through. We were on our heels defensively the whole night. The frenetic style led to some uncharacteristic turnovers, but we were also very sloppy. We didn't adjust to them jumping the passing lanes, and it led to a lot of dumb turnovers. I echo the concerns of other posters that our sometimes blase attitude on the court and letting all these teams come back on us will cost us a game we shouldn't lose. Hopefully we stop that trend soon. This team is good enough to win out the rest of the season, but that will be very tough to do..
