RE: How many of you are satisfied with basketball program?
He shouldn't have been hired in the first place and shouldn't have been giving the extension. However, that's not his fault, but poor management by the athletic department. He made a fundamental mistake right-off the bat by stating that he would concentrate on recruiting Memphis players and following through with the pledge. He's paying dearly for that recruiting mistake. I doubt that he will be able to overcome that mistake. Cal laid out the plan for how to win at Memphis at the level fans expect. All Josh had to do was follow it. However, I'm willing to let the season play out and see what unfolds and quit all the whining and bitching. I hate whining more than losing.

The loses no longer hurt
On the steak comparison, add enough sauce and they both taste the same

How do you know the money is there? Close friends with Mr. Smith and others who pay the freight so you can add another post to your count? I am sure others would like to know where the money is being held. Maybe you have put the 10 million in an account, just waiting till the season is over to buy Josh out. If so many thanks.

RE: How many of you are satisfied with basketball program?
I will continue to watch the games and hope they win. However I do not get that sick feeling in my stomach that I used to when the game winds down to the final two minutes.
Told myself last night if basketball was a 38 minute game we would have a national championship and maybe only have lost a few games this year.

Would we lose any fans if Pastner was let go? Or would they just fawn over the next coach?
Good question.
Here's a comparison between Pastner and Steak.
I think most would be satisfied/okay with Pastner if he was still under his original contract which paid him approx $850,000 - $900,000 per year. (A good somewhat inexpensive "top sirloin" steak at Outback)
However, 3 years ago, Memphis decided to give Pastner a huge raise into the top level of coaching status to $2.65 Million per year (Aged Filet at Ruth's Chris) and I think that impacts one overview of the program.
Right now I think Memphis (and fans/boosters) are paying for a beautiful aged filet but are getting an inexpensive Outback Sirloin in return (not a bad cheap steak but WAY over priced at that level).
It is all about the money. Most are upset that he makes so much and in comparison produces so little. He makes a salary that produces expectations that we have annual runs in the NCAA. Prior to Cal's "tainted" three great years we were not exceptional. We made the NCAA/NIT some years not others but our coaches were not overpaid for their efforts. He know he has not produced and I know he wants more for the team and the fans but it is hard for many to not be jealous of his good fortune.

I try not to care but I still get upset and frustrated. If I still do I know the team does.

RE: How many of you are satisfied with basketball program?
I'm not satisfied as I didn't renew my season tickets, due to several reasons. I keep hoping CJP will turn it on but I got tired of holding my breath. 40+ years a Tiger fan and we are sinking every year it seems. My optimism has dissipated to the point of not even knowing when the Tigers play many games. Sad really.

I agree. Still need 3 million for the athletic facilities campaign not to mention all the proposed projects on both campuses. I hate that money would have to go to someone who is already rich beyond my comprehension instead of into the endowment, or academic programs, or the athletic facilities, or academic buildings.
Good news - his buyout next season is only $8MM
We could do a lot of awesome things for the University and athletic program with that kind of cash. I suppose there is a chance that the people providing that money might not automatically give to another project. I also don't know the specific economics of keeping Pastner until the payout is much lower versus firing him now. Perhaps paying the buyout is cheaper than keeping the coach in the long run.

While I still love some good old A1 (original) sauce on cheap pieces of meat (london broil, sirloin), a great filet just needs the right seasonings so no sauce is usually ever needed.

The next person who says "the money is there" needs to provide sources or at the very least details on why they think so.

And the coaches from that era all got fired. Including Larry Finch who had a better NCAA resume than Pastner and who many including myself still consider the greatest Tiger.

I agree this this, as well.
I'll say this... This team is fun to watch, and is much better than the team last year. It's also a more disciplined team. We actually do excel in certain areas, whereas last year was pretty sloppy all together. But, I think our coaching has hindered our ability to win some games this year.

Sometimes you hear the announcers expecting the Memphis brand of basketball that goes way back, yet you never see it or just spurts of it.
So our rep is still doing well.

I've seen a couple instances of the AASA dribble attacking driving skip etc offense this year...that kinda looked promising

I agree. After 7 years as a HC, there should be more close wins, rather than close losses.
We have a coach who cannot or is not able to come up with a structured offense that puts the players in a position to win.
He is not able to light the fire and get the team motivated to win.
He needs to coach and motivate the team to get past these last 2 minute jitters.
As of now, even the announcers and press do not feel he can do it.
He needs to do something different to win, because what he is doing now is not working.
Stupid to say, "we hung with OU, or it is the refs fault, or whatever the current excuse is.
Josh is just not the coach for Memphis. Last season and this season prove this.

We just need a real coach to begin with. Everything else could or should fall into place and I'm willing to live with that.
