New game - who's the coach
It's on me.

We're going to work really hard to put a better product on the field next year.

We have to coach better.

So who's the coach? Or does it matter.

Rice's David Bailiff is a candidate to become next head coach at UTSA

"HOUSTON - David Bailiff, two-time Conference USA Coach of the Year at Rice, is a candidate to become the next head coach at UTSA.

College football sources told FOX 26 Sports UTSA officially asked for and received permission from Rice to speak with Bailiff."

I dont know, I am actually starting to like DB. I think he can probably do better here at UTSA with a higher attendance and lower acceptance standards.

Bring in Mike Sherman. Class act. Pay him big bucks. His assistants big bucks. Knows what it takes to recruit kids who have pro potential. Almost his whole offensive line at A&M is in pros, plus Tannehill and some receivers. He got JFF to come-- Rice his only other offer. Give him a national recruiting budget so he can bring in smart kids from all over to play.
If you poll our baseball players, betcha if they were truthful, would say Graham's ability to get guys into the pros is a reason they came.

I'm very intrigued to see what DB can do at a school where he has more support and can recruit better. I think he generally has a ceiling at, or at best, slightly above his athletes. So with that, if he can find a way to get significantly better athletes to come into his program, I think he could fair well. He also needs to have good assistants under him. I think that is where UTSA would struggle if they weren't willing to shell out for it.

My guess is that if this comes to pass, he will take a lot his assistants with him. That's pretty common. And the present Rice assistants would probably want a fresh start rather than be left out in the cold with a new coach coming on board.

I agree he could do better at UTSA than at Rice. JUCO city? And he might even beat us a few times as we recover.

Sherman would be about the only retread I would consider because he can recruit.

If he leaves does this mean we'll have another 12 years rebuilding phase?

RE: New game - who's the coach
You improve by getting better players or by getting the players you have to play better. You either get better parts, or you use schemes and execution to make the whole greater than the sum of the parts.

DB is all about getting better parts. The staff for the most part does a good job of improving the skills of the parts, but we don't generate improvement in the performance of the team relative to those parts. That will always play better at a place like UTSA, with fewer recruiting restrictions, than it will at Rice. Rice needs a coach who will get the best parts he can, and then make the whole greater than the sum of the parts. DB has not yet shown that he possesses that skill set.

I dearly hope UTSA hires Bailiff. It solves many problems for Rice. Rice NEEDS a new football coach just to keep people interested, and not having to fire Bailiff saves money. Rice should waive the buyout if UTSA is having problems getting money together.

I think Bailiff would suddenly find it is easier to recruit to Rice than UTSA. Bailiff did understand Rice to the extent he could sell the Rice degree to recruits. It's much harder to sell the UTSA degree. Bailiff isn't going to take UTSA anywhere special, that's for certain.

We could probably get Sherman cheap considering he's a high school coach now. His trajectory, since he got hired at A&M, has definitely been downward. Not sure he's what we want.

Make no mistake, having Bailiff move on will not by itself fix everything, but it is the one move that has the most potential to rapidly change things for the better. Rice could still fumble the opportunity if it refuses to commit to football more fully than it has even now.

Rice still unmistakenly has tons of work to do to make the situation work out for the school. If Rice goes back to being cheap, decides to take a breather from competition with a new coach, or chooses not to hold him (or I guess it technically could be her?) to a higher standard of on-field success, than it will make little if any progress form this potential move. Investment is still required by the university. Should a change occur, it might be easier to get some outside support than it has been at times.

One thing I hope is that, win or lose, the product on the field becomes more entertaining and we leave the meercat behind. I think there is talent there, but any new coach will have to find a way to make the sum exceed the parts, and we have the type of school where we can sell that to football fans tired of the same ol, same ol. We can still brand ourselves as unconventional, but we'd need a coach who would actually embrace that and make it work for us.

Not sure what he's making, or if he'd consider it... Fits in with Dr K's PAC 12 contacts.
Tom Bradley. UCLA DC. Aproaching the end of his career but has a great coaching history and pedigree.
