Larry Coker out at UTSA
There is zero patience these days. He should have had a job until retirement.

As mentioned in the Coaching Carousel thread, the timing is odd. So wonder if something has happened or perhaps he just decided he doesn't have the energy for another year?

RE: Larry Coker out at UTSA
He "retired". You know, saved face, and said he was stepping down, rather than force the AD's hand. Things were in obvious disarray with assistant coaches leaving left and right for other lateral moves.

He did a great job building UTSA's program.

RE: Larry Coker out at UTSA
He could have at least called it a "retirement." Like I said though, he built that program from the ground up and they were bound to have some lean days, he should have had till he "retired."

They scheduled way too tough for a new program. He seemed to have built his reputation off of Butch Davis' recruits.

EDIT: I see he did "retire" based on posts made while I made this post.

Bingo. UTSA was constantly behind the eight ball playing 3-4 tough "P5" programs every year. I think this past year UTSA played Oklahoma State, Arizona, and Kansas State and obviously lost all three. Colorado State from the MWC was their "easy" game. They also incurred to many injuries to key players.

RE: Larry Coker out at UTSA
Maybe the timing is a function of negotiating a buyout of the 3 years that were remaining on Coker's contract, and having to wait until after the holidays to get the UTSA administrators to sign off on the buyout terms.

They've done relatively well as a new football school under Coker.

There must be more to the story.

He is pretty old, or at least he certainly looks it.

He's 67.

Honestly he lasted longer than I figured he would at UTSA.

UTSA football has only been around 5 years. What, you thought he'd be done in three seasons?

They lost to North Texas a few weeks after Portland State blew them out 66-7. I think the natives were getting impatient and restless.

Me too, but maybe now that his job is done in regards to getting the program started, he doesn't have the energy to keep it going.

When your defensive coordinator jumps ship to take the same gig at Eastern Michigan you know there is trouble. He fired his OC immediately after the season and hadn't named a replacement. I think they lost two or three more assistants on top of the coordinators.

Buyout unless he agreed to a lopsided deal will be at least $1.35 million.

As a EMU fan, I can support this statement, our head coach was hired from a non scholarship FCS school.

Actually two years. I knew he was getting up there in age and I figured that the process of building a program from scratch would be too much.

Fastest way to get fired...lose the home crowd. Crowds instead of pushing 30k like they did 2 years ago were in the low/mid teens.

But how much of the home crowd was there for the novelty and not really "fan base". They did a great job marketing but I believe if you go back and look, Arena Football, the AFL, USF, WFL, all opened to nicer numbers than they settled into for the next season or so.
