Why is Coach Beard able to win like this and Steve wasn't?
Talent. Even though we lost two really good players in James White and James Reid, Coach Beard brought in the pieces that we needed to fit in with what we had returning. And he's managed to pull the right strings getting players in and out of games when needed. My main concern going into the season was that we had so many players, that the coach would have a difficult time figuring out who to play and when.
Well Coach Beard has certainly answered that question.
And we have some darn good players sitting out this year. DeShawn Watkins and Oliver Black should be really fine players in the SBC for the next few seasons. And Evan Moorman is a pure shooter we can use when he gets healthy. Our two high school recruits look like really fine players for the future, and we'll still probably sign at least one or two more players in April. First you have to have talent. Then you have to know how to mold it into a team. Coach Beard has excelled at both so far.

1st guards win mid major bb and Steve never had 3 that could start on any other sbc team like beard has.
2nd the kids know the plays and dont SOS(stare at Steve)
3rd the kids don't look like they are over thinking things.

Coach Beard has definitely added some key players. Jalen Jackson and Marcus Johnson are all-Sun Belt quality players. Lis is much better than I expected. Shields did have a lot of bad luck with injuries. Could he have won more with a healthy Mike Smith, Will Neighbour, or James White? No doubt. Won at Coach Beard's level. Doubtful.
Haven't seen any recent predictions about our conference record. At this point, I think something like 16-4 is possible since we have already won 2 out of our 10 road games. Can we go 4-4 in the rest of our road games? Can we sweep our 10 home games? We'll know more after this weekend, but UTA and GaSt will be the really tests.

RE: Why is Coach Beard able to win like this and Steve wasn't?
He's recruited better talent, run a better system, substituted better, and is a better game coach. Pretty simple. Shields did have good guards, though. Hagins is great, Gillon WAS great but Steve ensured he left, Bozeman, Williams, Foster, Mouzy. He's had good guards. He did, however, misuse all of them. The only player Beard is misusing is Isom, and that's more out of necessity than anything. Shields was the king of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.
