So how does this writer know all this? Such detail .... millions of people where the guy buys the house and the girl claims she's crazy or has a bad back. My, my. Must be President Obama's fault.

If the system is so flawed, I can't fault people for exploiting it. Tax loopholes and welfare abuse are two sides of the same coin.

That being said, let's fix the system.

Talk to any county social worker for 30 minutes.

By the way, who said "Millions of people"... Is that your way to try and ignore the fact such things are even possible? See now you can ignore the substance and latch onto this "millions of people" talking point.

This is not an Obama problem. This is a welfare state problem. But again I give you kudos for finding a way to ignore the broken system by pretending someone said millions of people or that anyone talked about Obama.

You do realize at this level of abuse 14K people would constitute more than a billion dollars of waste right?

#11. Doesn't matter what mailing address the guy uses, IRS sees residence as where you spend your time. If he's living there more than half the time, that's his residence, not his mom's.

#12. Claiming dependents is not as easy as who the mother/father is. It depends upon the support paid for that child. It also depends on residence. The child has to live with you for more than half the year to claim.

#13. Getting disability isn't that easy for many people.

Bottom line, if these folks get audited, they're in a world of hurt.

And of course all this ignores the fact that wealthy people use loopholes to save money too.

11) that's the point of using another address. IRS sees your residence and were you spend your time were you tell them to see it.
12) I know ******** who pay no support and don't even see their kids and claim them.
13) Getting it is hard for some. Seems to be mostly for those with legitimate cases. And yet extremely easy to get for others. And quite often in cases where they shouldn't get it. You figure out the system, you'll be the first.

Yes, auditing could be a big problem. Still even with that risk many do these things anyway.

Primarily because the chances of them getting audited are slim to none. Instead of actively investigating to see if there is fraud in the system the government chooses to adopt the "See no evil" philosophy. We as a department reported stuff we ran into on calls that was especially egregious until we were instructed from on high to cease wasting DSS's time.

And the penalties for willful abuse and evasion are far more severe than general reporting "mistakes" on your return. They're playing with fire...and reporting abusers to the IRS is more likely to be looked into than DSS I would guess.

But I imagine you'll all admit that the price to leave the fraud as is is far less than the alternative of a bigger government intrusion into all our lives to weed it out, yes?

It's the price we pay for a mostly voluntarily reporting structure. I doubt you want it to be any more stringent.

Yeah, about those severe penalties. Know a guy, about 60, never paid nor filed. In his life as far as I know. Stroke. Asked for and got SS disability. Penalty: 10% withheld for back taxes.

RE: This is happening more than progressives will admit..
I have a friend who is essentially 100% disabled and drawing benefits. What is his disability? Well, he injured his shoulder yanking on carts at Wal Mart. That became a neck injury. After some coaching from an experienced disability lawyer, he's now 100% disabled.

Anecdotal? Yes. However, if my friend was able to find an attorney to assist, I doubt my friend is the first client he pushed through the system.

I have another friend who works drug interdiction for a federal agency in a large city. He talks about so many houses they bust have people inside on disability. They spend their days, sitting in filth, playing video games and selling/using drugs while on the government teat. Its easy to pick out the houses getting home heating assistance in the old neighborhoods too. Why? Their roofs have no snow in the winter because they can afford to crank up the heat so high in the house.

Again, anecdotal, but enough to point out to me that the system is malleable, abusable and broken.

Simple solution. Government does not need to be intrusive except for people that it is paying money to.

Note that with my negative income tax/prebate/prefund approach, the problem largely disappears.

Or, how about everybody pays 10% across the board. No loopholes. You get two deductions. The first $36,000 for a family of 4 is tax free. Every dollar after that is 10% taxed, except for deduction number two - charitable donations. There is no government disability. There is no welfare. There is no food stamp program. There is no federal housing. There is only charity. If you are hungry, go to your family, your local church, your community food pantry. etc. etc.

As a side benefit, churches will go back to doing what they are supposed to be doing with the tithe. helping the poor.

There are people that do abuse disability. My bil is one. My neighbor and his son are two, but there are people on disability that do need assistance. I say if you can work, physically able to with a medical exam then no benefits. Heck, if we go by creaky old bones that even I would qualify. But my brother who lost his legs below the knees should qualify. Funny but as smart as he "thinks" he is I don't even know if he ever tried for it.

As for federal housing a couple whose husband makes around 90k was living in fed. housing. He got caught and is being made to pay what he should.

Etc. etc.
