Easy. Multiple NCAA appearances and success in those appearances.

But how did they start getting the type of players who could accomplish that?

Thank you. What a great article. Little Rock could certainly use some of those ideas to move forward. We now have a progressive AD, Chasse Conque, and a great young coach, Chris Beard. Little Rock has some black marks on it's history, notably the high schools closing in the 1950's integration crisis. We've lived in the shadow of that black mark for years.

A successful Little Rock basketball program, similar to Gonzaga's, could do wonders for our city, which is a great place to live and work. It could give our city a sense of pride that we haven't had before.

One of our message board members known as LR Trojan, a long time supporter of our program, has stated that he became a fan when we used to have our games on TV. I don't know if that's still feasible, but that would be a great start to have our own network for our games. We have the arena. We have the city. All we need is the right things to fall into place and we could be the next Gonzaga.

I've been saying this for several years that we need to get some sort of TV deal here in the LR area. It doesn't have to be a regional broadcast or anything like that. If we could get one of the secondary local TV stations to broadcast our games, or perhaps even on a delayed basis, that would allow a lot of folks to see the team that might never see us play otherwise. Had it not been for the TV games, I may have never seen a Trojan game. It worked for me, and I'm sure a lot of others who began to turn out for games.

I don't believe for a minute that the Little Rock Central crisis in the late 50's has any bearing on things today with recruiting players to come here. None of these kids, and many of their parents weren't even alive then.

Agreed that the LR Central crisis has no effect on our recruiting. If by chance any recruit was aware of it, the fact that LR Central is a National Historic Landmark (the only high school in the nation with such a designation) and has a museum dedicated to civil rights administered by the National Park Service, it would probably be a plus!

I didn't mean to imply it affected our recruiting. I just think when many folks around the country who think of Little Rock, they think of 1957-58. A great basketball program could give us credibility around the country and maybe folks would be talking about the Little Rock Trojans instead of the Little Rock Nine!

I was born in '52 in Indiana and never once thought of Central when I heard anything of Little Rock, and I was a relatively current-event-aware kid as an aspiring journalist. Maybe my dad thought this way, but he would have been 97 this coming May.

I remember the Little Rock Seven. Or maybe the Magnificent Seven under Jim Platt.

Gonzaga had been to the Dance in 1995, but their run began in 1999. Dan Monson had records of 24 and 28 wins, and was succeeded by Mark Few, who is in his 16th year. They were able to follow up a good coach with a better coach, whom they got to stay long-term. Tough to do, especially in the desert of western Washington.
