That's what's worrisome though. I think we wanted someone with connections higher on the totem pole rather than lower.

How do you know that he doesn't have them? He may have contacts that you are not aware of. He may have been an associate A.D. somewhere before going to UNI. Don't be so quick to judge.

I think what you "want" is a guy who knows how to put together and sustain an athletic department that succeeds. "Connections" are weird things...kind of like "potential." Potential unrealized is just potential.

The point of pointing to UNI's FCS football success is that the guy successfully ran a program that excelled in BB and had success in FB as well. He kept all the proverbial "balls" up in the air at the same time, not just one-at-the-expense-of-the-other.

I don't think you're going to necessarily see him poaching off the UNI coaches, though. There are contractual and ethical issues with that. But clearly Dannen knows how to evaluate and manage both FB and BB coaches and their programs to give them optimal chance to succeed.

RE: Tulane to hire UNI AD Troy Dannen
Tulane pulled someone away from an AD position at their alma mater WHILE THEY WERE WINNING THERE.

This fact alone tells me that chit's changed in NOLA. I'm curious to see who the next football coach will be.

I really do hope y'all are right. I'm just very unsure at this point, but a history of success is definitely a solid attribute to bring to the table. And Wolken's excited, so that's heartening.

Reports that Tulane has hired Northern Iowa’s Troy Dannen as AD. Haven’t confirmed but if true that is an outstanding hire.

Dan Wolken Retweeted Andrew Gilboard
Troy is a really smart, personable, aggressive AD who has really wanted a shot at an FBS program. He’ll kill it.

"aggressive AD"

That smoke you're smelling isn't the football coach search, but rather Conroy's arse burning on the hot seat.

There are going to be some AD moves in the near future... We have only seen the most dire situations open up at places like Rutgers, but there are rumblings at some high-level places where things are not good.

My guess is that the Baylor guy looked around and decided to see what else might well open up closer in.

Word is that he turned us down. Can't confirm that, but that's what I heard.

You realize that a lot of people haven't heard of Tulane, right? And that's in spite of our academics.

I was just about to say... UNI is not an unknown, check their NCAA tourney history and their FCS football team is up and rising. Often listed as a favorite for MAC expansion (yeah i know blah blah MAC sucks but it's still better than FCS)

Can't react. I know nothing about this guy or his programs. But I hope it works out for the Wave.

If this guy can get Tulane hoops to the level UNI is then he's worth his weight in gold.

By the way, my concern that he lacks those stems from the fact that he's been AD at UNI for 9 years or so, and before that he was with the Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union for 18 years. So UNI is his only collegiate athletics job at any title before us.

I'm less concerned after hearing a member of our board quoted as saying that Bob Bowlsby (who was also at UNI at one point) has raved about him, and they're apparently close.

I like the fact that he doesn't seem the type to run from one job to another.

1. It would be plain stupid if Tulane didn't ask around before hiring the new AD. This just the Big XII and Tulane both doing due diligence on the matter.

2. I can make a valid case for every single AAC member becoming a possible addition into a P5 conference. I fully believe that Tulane can get comfortable here in the AAC. We'll be here awhile.

3. You can have a healthy relationship with the P5 while not being in the P5 itself.

I don't think anyone's doubting any of those points.

Is Dannen going to make that decision?

Is he starting at Tulane today?

1. Yes. It's 100% his choice.

2. He is starting on 1/1, but he will hire a FB coach ahead of that date. He has to put together things at UNI (his alma mater) for the next month before he goes.

Thanks for the heads-up, oliveblue. Definitely good news.

What I had heard is that Dickson was staying on until May so I figured he would be making this call.
