Hmmm, Cincinnati was a charter member with the MAC from 1946-1953. I think if you go back far enough in time you will see most schools have jumped conferences due to changes and factors in their athletic programs, academic profiles, campus institutions, geography, rivalries, and of course most recently the influence of television contracts. If my history is correct, other than as an Independent the Bearcats' longest conference membership affiliation was in the Ohio Athletic Conference (1910-1925) followed by the Missouri Valley Conference (1957-1969).

Beaten is not a descriptive enough word to fairly portray the fiasco in Tennessee, but your other conclusions seem accurate.
