Even though USM might not be considered one of the best teams in nation and might not even be the best team in CUSA, but...I think Todd Monken should be up for the award of "College Football Coach of the Year" for what he has done for the Southern Miss Football program since his arrival. Even though most fans from other schools know the struggles we've had since the end of 2011, but only us Golden Eagle fans know the gut-wrenching turmoil we've had to endure..and can really appreciate what Coach Monken has done to resurrect our program to winning ways.

let's not get carried away.....

he's easily the front runner for cusa coy....

we still got games to play....

all the older posters know what I think about monk.....or anyone that's read my crap over the last 4 yrs....

let's just enjoy what's going on right now and cool the jets.....

edit: if we win out including the ccg, an argument could be made in favor....I'll give ya that

RE: Todd Monken
While Monken has done a fantastic job getting Southern Miss to where they are this year, I don't know if he's the front-runner. Keep in mind that Marshall's Holliday is a.) now starting only 4 starters on offense that he broke camp with on first team offense, b.) looking for another 10 win season and title in a rebuild year, and c.) has not won a CUSA COY award.

Recognizing that Southern Miss has turned the corner, I think believe Holliday has overcome a lot of adversity this year. He's basically been going the last half of the season as a converted WR as his 6th deep RB, switched QBs, didn't start the same starting offensive line until game 8, and he's pasted together a championship-type season with a MASH unit on offense. I also wonder how much of a "lifetime achievement" due factor comes into play.

Not a knock on Monken, who I'm really coming to respect as a guy who will get it done at USM, but I feel Holliday has done his best coaching job this year.

You mean if S.Miss wins out?

I can't see him winning CUSA coy unless S. Miss wins out of at the very least wins the west.

Without winning the west S. Miss will be 1 game over what most thought preseason?

Sorry but that's not COY worthy

If Western or Marshall wins CUSA coy should come from the winner. Its just as hard being a front runner with everyone gunning for you and to win as it is to be picked 3rd and finish 2nd in your division. Not only that but actually win some games vs schools with a winning record.

Monken has done a good job, but lets not go overboard. If he wins out and wins CUSA, then maybe CUSA coach of the year.

Slow down a bit there...lol

Brian Kelly (ridiculous numbers of injuries at Notre Dame this season)
Justin Fuente (but trending downward now)
Houston's coach (whoever it is)
Jim McElwain
Dabo Swinney (though there's an absurd amount of talent on that team)
Kirk Ferentz (they really aren't great, but he keeps winning)

I am leaning Dabo or McElwain.

Monken has done a very good job this season, but not from a National perspective.

It's about improvement, WKU has a 7 year returning starter at QB. If Brohm were COY material you guys wouldn't have lost to
Indiana. Right now Monken has my vote for CUSA but not on a national level

Most folks had us behind Rice and UTEP this season.

It's not our fault the conference kind of sucks this year and is extremely top heavy.

I frankly don't see who else would be coach of the year. No other team has outperformed preseason expectations than USM.

I agree, westside, but I am a USM fan. I don't see any other coach has done better than him so far this year.

I was just saying from the perspective of what he has pulled us out of in the last several seasons to the level of performance we are doing right now...Monken has showed his worth and I'm very hopeful that USM gives him what he deserves, a contract extension and higher pay...(hopefully we can afford to do that)!

That's easily true if we win the West. Otherwise, as someone stated earlier in this thread, we were pretty much expected to be bowl-eligible and finish 3rd, so finishing 2nd and going to a bowl isn't that big of a stretch in the grand scheme of things.

We're a hell of a lot better than I, as a fan who's watched this whole painful drama unfold, thought we were going to be. I never expected we'd be blowing anyone except maybe Charlotte off the field like we've been doing. It's not entirely clear, though, how much of that is Monken being COY-worthy vs. our opponents just being that down. Let's re-visit this thread in a couple of weeks.

From what I have heard, Zac Woodfin deserves any award as much as anyone from USM.

I did and so did anybody watching them. How many transfers and Jucos did they pick up between this season and last season? They shored up a lot of holes from last year and it shows.

No doubt, the Juco's and transfers have played a huge role in the turnaround this year.

I don't want USM fans to think that I was taking a slight at you guys when I posted that. We won a division with a Grad-Transfer at QB and could very well do it again this year.
