How about London or Golden, they would be great hires for Maryland.

Kevin Plank has already donated $25 million. The new Cole Field House will include Under Armour in its name.

But Plank hasn't shown he is willing to throw around Phil Knight/Nike type money that Oregon gets has he?
Oregon may not have the wealthy boosters that UMCP has. Plank also stated that he wanted the UMCP community to contribute as a matter of state pride and getting alumni re-engaged. With Plank's $25 million gift, UMCP was nearly half way towards the goal of raising $95 million in private money to redevelop Cole Field House. That was nearly one year ago. In the last few days the local papers have hinted that Edsall may be the barrier towards reaching that fundraising goal.

Plank's money may be needed for future projects. For example, Byrd Stadium may have to be expanded again to compete against the big boys in the Big Ten East. Personally, I think UMCP should just buy FedEx Field after Dan Snyder, a MD alumnus and Washington Redskins owner, builds a new stadium in DC in the next decade.
That's my point, Plank is contributing & expects other Maryland boosters to help while Knight writes the checks that allow Oregon to compete at the highest level, they have little need to raise funds. Knight fronted(covered the expenses) of their state of the art practice facility as a example
Plank's not going to invest more money upfront in MD football if the support isn't there. Everyone has to be on the same page. That's Plank's position. Unfortunately, the administration has a history of throwing the football program under the bus. It happened to Jim Tatum, Bobby Ross and Ralph Friedgen.

Chip Kelly to USC!! SS is gone apparently because of a drinking problem. They say he was showing up at meeting and practices clearly inebriated, and then missed a practice. Haden needs to get this next hire right or he's gone and the Trojans will be looking for a new AD.

Eventually Schiano is going to get something. Maybe this is it.

Well, now both USC's are available and better jobs than Maryland, but at least they tried.

Schiano would be the perfect hire for UMD. Completely uninspiring. Pretty much Edsall part II.

I hope not. His success as HC can be attributed to the departure of Miami, Virgina Tech and Boston College. Once Louisville and Cincinnati adjusted to the BE, Schiano looked pretty ordinary.

To compete against Meyer, Harbaugh, D'Antonio and Franklin, UMD has to make a high profile hire, assuming the administration is "all in" for big time football. A face-to-face meeting with Kevin Plank, including a ride in his private jet, should be enough to convince most candidates about the seriousness UMD has in improving its football program.

Again I ask...who fits that bill? There's just not that many to choose from, considering the jobs that will be open.

A top flight coach is going to cost 6-7 million plus another 3-4 million for his staff plus another couple million for support staff, recruiting budget etc & where exactly do you expect to get the playersto compete at a elite level? The DMV is a solid base but their's not enough talent to supply all the B1G schools along with the several ACC ,SEC,Notre Dames etc. So that means going south to NC,SC,GA,FL & you haven't had much presence there even when you were in the ACC

I was being sarcastic. He's the perfect hire if UMD wants to continue down the toilet.

I should've stated beforehand that I don't think the administration is all in for football. Culturally, UMD is still an ACC school and should never have left the conference over a short term liquidity crisis (I think the long term revenue projections were BS, crafted to justify the move). The move opened the DMV area to Big Ten recruiting while closing the door to recruits in the south. But the move hurts Penn State even more, since they usually got the best players. Now they have to compete against Ohio State and Michigan.

OK. I didn't get beyond the first sentence. The thought of Schiano just horrified me. LOL!

Again I ask...who fits that bill? There's just not that many to choose from, considering the jobs that will be open.

I think the answer is that no P5 coach both fits that bill and would be willing to move to Maryland. Maybe an NFL assistant who has some college coaching experience would give it a try. But Maryland boosters aren't going to be happy with somebody like Bill Callahan, who is currently with the Redskins.

That says a G5 up and comer or a P5 coordinator. Maryland needs to realize who they are and who they are playing against. I don't think hiring a successful MAC coach is the way to go for them, though I think they could have their pick of several if they move quickly. Personally, I would go all out for a top coordinator from an established P5 perennial winner - somebody who has seen what it takes to win close up.

My list of targets would include Kirby Smart (Bama OC), Luke Fickell (Ohio St DC), Cam Cameron (LSU DC) and Brent Venables (Clemson DC). I wouldn't waste any time flirting with big names who they have no chance to land. But I would also be prepared to lose whoever I hire if they are highly successful in College Park. Because Maryland will never be a destination school in football.

RE: Maryland Firing Edsall
This is what Wallace Loh had to say about potential candidates:

http://maryland.247sports.com/Bolt/Maryl...w-40207220

Quote:“The choice of the next coach is going to be absolutely critical,” Loh said in a meeting with The Baltimore Sun’s editorial board. “The question becomes, what kind of coach do we want? I think [Anderson] said a coach that plays an exciting brand of football -- wide open, that has the personality to relate to the kids, the personality to project himself well (to boosters, media) … You have to have an outsized personality here. It’s not just knowing the X’s and O’s.

“That’s why you have the Jim Harbaugh’s and Urban Meyer’s,” Loh said, referring to two of the biggest names on coaching, who the Terps have to face on a year-to-year basis.

“We’re in the big leagues now. It’s about football; the Big Ten is not about basketball,” Loh continued. “We have significant new revenue stemming in and we’re going to have an indoor facility … We can have a decrepit Byrd Stadium -- you only use Byrd Stadium five times a year or so -- [but] those kids use an indoor facility every single day. What draws them here in the indoor facility, not Byrd Stadium. With the Big Ten Network and that exposure, and of course the connection to Under Armour, I would say that this is one of the most attractive jobs in the country for somebody that’s ambitious and willing to take risks.”

...

“All I can say is Kevin Anderson is committed to getting the right coach to make us highly competitive in the Big Ten,” Loh said. “We will have to pay a competitive rate. I don’t know what competitive is, but Harbaugh and Urban [Meyer] make seven million dollars a year. And Chip Kelly, who is not doing all that well with the Philadelphia Eagles, made far, far less than that at Oregon.”
Not sure why Loh had to take a swipe at the ACC. It's embarrassing.

Because, maybe, he is a Big Ten guy? It sounds like the same asinine comments Randy Edsell made about"being in a football conference". Way to go Maryland; more classlessness...

They've got a long haul in front of them. You've got a team that was uncompetitive in the ACC, gets a boost in revenue from the B1G, but ends up relative to their conference, even FURTHER behind in resources and fan support.

That's going to be a tough recipe to work with. Virtually impossible. It's like moving from Arkansas to San Francisco to get a $10k raise.

I expect that they'll eventually settle into roughly an Illinois or Indiana level in the B1G. Maybe not quite as consistently bad as Indiana has been, but hang in around 4-7 wins a year, like they did in the ACC.

All that Maryland has to hope for on the football field is to not become Purdue.
