Context? Accuracy? Who's got time for that? Especially when a truncated soundbite better fits one's preconceived opinion.

Really? What was actually said versus what was misquoted or taken out of context?

Not sure what you're asking.
I hate when either say pulls quotes out of context or intentionally shortens them to twist their meaning and use them for political gain. "You didn't build that" was a perfect example. Do you think it wasn't?

I hate it when statements are pulled out of context and their meaning twisted.
My question is whether that actually happened with the, "You didn't build that," comment. From what I have seen and heard, the full statement was actually worse than the out-of-context blurb. Perhaps what I have seen and heard is incorrect, I'm not an expert on the quote.
I guess my question would be how the quote as presented was worse than the full statement.

For sure. I wasn't being literal about that example as being the worst example of all time. It was more of the colloquial expression of frustration that many people of my generation use. Generally it's a phrase denoting frustration and exhaustion with something.

You can read the whole quote/speech here to build your own conclusion: http://www.factcheck.org/2012/07/you-did...-unedited/
When you read or listen to the speech, it's pretty obvious that the exact quote of "You didn't build that" was in relation to the brides and roads he immediately mentioned before he made the comment.

That's not obvious to me, but I will agree that it's certainly a possible interpretation of that specific statement within its specific position in the speech.
But I would also say that, "If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen," is a reasonable summary of the entire section as quoted in the linked article.
The whole section is intended to develop a collectivist theme with which I disagree strongly. First, the implication is that you didn't build that road, government did. But if government did it, taxes paid for it, and if you run a successful business, your taxes, and those of your employees and customers and suppliers, most likely paid--or will surely pay in the future--a substantial portion of the cost of that road. So in a very strong sense, you did do it. Second, that road was there for everybody. Not everybody built a successful business. So the road obviously didn't do it, something else clearly did. And that something else was you.
I can understand the argument that the oft-quoted comments were lifted out of their immediate context. But I don't agree that they are misleading with respect to the entire section.

Wow, McCarthy drops out of Speaker race. Probably good long term for the GOP. [Edit: if they nominate someone better than McCarthy....]
Speaking of gaffes, Colbert did an absolutely hilarious thing on McCarthy and his awkward statements. So I suspect he, at least, is disappointed...

Lest I be misinterpreted here, I'm good-naturedly joking with both of you. As a Weissman, I now who George is and that he's not *that* much older than me. (I'm in OO's "Wait a minute!" range.)
And I'm pretty sure he was just joking with you about the unintended broad scope of your statement....

I was sure George was joking after his first response. Wasn't quite sure after the second though (unless there was something in the second reply that went way over my head).
Regardless, the tone of my response about the phrase was meant to lighthearted, not sure if it came across that way. Always a hard thing to do on the Internet.

And yes, RiceLad's tone came across perfectly. It was a bit subtle, but than only made it more sublime.

So Paul Ryan might be willing to be speaker - if his demands are met. Really an odd situation. Oddest to me is seeing him being attacked as a RINO or sell out. I thought he had pretty solid conservative credentials.

No surprise there at all. They think Jason Chaffetz is a RINO too.

Biden won't run.
"As my family and I have worked through the grieving process, I've said all along what I've said time and again to others, that it may very well be that that process by the time we get through it closes the window on mounting a realistic campaign for president, that it might close. I've concluded it has closed."
