What’s a rivalry without a trophy?

Georgia State and Georgia Southern are adding a yet-to-be-announced piece of hardware to their growing feud. The trophy will be awarded to the school that defeats the other in a points-based system that encompasses all sports, as well as community service and academics.

The athletics department with the most points at the end of the school year will receive the trophy at the following year’s football game.

More details will be announced closer to this year’s football game, which will be played Dec. 5 in Statesboro.

Here are the basics of the scoring system:

With the exception of this year’s football game, which will be worth two points, all head-to-head matchups will be worth one point. For sports that play series, such as baseball and softball, each will be worth one point. Sweeping volleyball series will be worth one point, or ½ point for each split. Volleyball will also be the first ½ point up for grabs when the schools meet in Statesboro on Oct. 7.

The university whose athletics department has the highest GPA for the combined fall and spring semesters will receive one point.

A community service project will be chosen by each school’s student-athlete advisory committee in which both will compete head to head. The winning school gets a point.

Point Accumulation – Regular Season

Two points

Football

One point

Women’s cross country championship, volleyball (1 pt. for series sweep or ½ point each if season series is split), women’s soccer, men’s soccer, men’s basketball (one for each game), women’s basketball (one for each game), men’s golf championship (best finish), women’s golf championship (best finish), men’s tennis championship (if eliminated in same round, ½ point each) women’s tennis championship (if eliminated in same round, ½ point each), indoor women’s track & field championship (best finish), outdoor women’s track & field championship (best finish), baseball (for series; if series is split because of weather, ½ point each will be awarded), softball (for series; if series is split because of weather, ½ point each will be awarded).

Point Accumulation – Postseason

In the sports of volleyball, women’s soccer, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball and softball, each school can pick up a bonus point for a win over the rival in a Sun Belt tournament. Double points if it occurs in the conference championship game and leads the rival to an NCAA tournament appearance.

Point Accumulation – Academics and Community Service

The school that finishes with the highest department‐wide GPA for the fall and spring semesters combined will earn one additional point.

Two community service projects (one fall, one spring) as agreed upon by the Athletic Directors will also each result in one point per project. Each school will be permitted to submit two ideas to see if they match up. If not, each school will be allowed to select one community service project.

Well, a football trophy would be kind of one sided...no?

considering how much you guys despise one another I'm surprised y'all don't have a trophy of some kind

What? I mean c'mon. Kind of a limp wristed idea if you ask me. Just do it in football like everyone else. Call it a day.

More than a trophy, I'd just like to see a traditional date for the game. If it isn't the annual season-ending game, then just make it the same Saturday every year. Maybe have it the first Saturday of November every year. Just something to rubber-stamp the rivalry would be great.

I'm glad we've moved on from the SoCon, but one thing that is missed is the fact we had meaningful rivalries like Furman (late 90's, early 00's it seemed like the three of us tied and traded turns at the top of the league every year) and, though we dominated them, Western Carolina. I'm really grateful that Georgia Southern carried over for us.

I've said it once, I'll say it a hundred times....

The Big Blue "U" trophy
- trophy in the shape of a blue block letter "U" with the dates that GS wins on one side and the dates GaSt wins on the other.

I also like the idea of it being awarded to the better school in more than just football but I think football should be a big part of it.

I swear.. if it has anything to do with the "U"....

It's all in good fun plus that makes the most sense for any rivalry trophy idea

Our women's soccer team is going to do so much more community service than yours!

Does court ordered community service count?

Bingo. You get a lot more people excited about a victory if you do it like that... just like how everyone else that has a trophy to fight over...

Doing like the Bubbas Cup or SoCon Commissioner Cup just waters everything down.

No way GASt does a football only trophy. AD Charlie Cobb is smarter than that. k

Well Gast had to have some sort of chance to win it.

I'm with everyone else, this has too many convoluted rules and regulations.

Make it simple. Win the football game, get the trophy for that year. Heck it could just be in the shape of the state of Georgia...call it the civil war.

As a poster so poignantly put it on Yosef's Cabin, the App v GS rivalry trophy will be the Sun Belt title just as it was in the Socon.
