Exclamation Colin McElroy has left the team.
This leaves us with only two healthy QBs on the roster and, or course, WR David Washington should we need him.

That stinks. Kinda feel for McElroy, but without knowing more, I'm disappointed that he would leave the team. There is still a chance of an injury or 2 and he would be able to play.

Good thing we have 2 QBs coming in. Geez

Tough break, but I didn't expect McElroy to be around this long.

I was always of the opinion that the long term ODU plan was to go with more traditional offense featuring taller pocket passer types. I felt Joey Verhaegh would challenge for the starting job, and Caleb Wilson would be the heir apparent. I honestly didn't think Bentley would come out of the Spring as the starter.

Wow. I read the article and it sounds like he left like a crybaby. At least he should've stayed and got his free Master's.

“Colin made a personal choice that he no longer wanted to be on the team,” Wilder said. “He wasn’t happy with his position on the depth chart.
“Based on that, he quit the team, he withdrew from school and he went home.

I hope everything works out for him. He should get used to things like that, its this sucky thing called life.

its kind of strange that he choose to leave now. its not like he didn't know his place on the depth chart at this time in the spring or even last year. unless, of course, he was under the impression that he'd get the chance at playing time this year.

He probably thought he would beat out LaRussa and was ahead of him on the depth chart and when Wilder finally told him he was third string, he quit.

It's unfortunate for Colin. I wish him the best of luck. But in all honestly, with the way LaRussa played this spring it was just a matter of time. He has a very lively arm and has great pocket presence. In fact it probably wouldn't take too much effort to convince me that he should be starting over Shuler. Perhaps we'll get a closer look at him after SB runs up the score this weekend. 03-thumbsup

We got to see LaRussa for one spring game. He looked good for that, but I'll trust the coaches when it comes to the depth chart.

No sarcasm. Last year, after looking at Joey's films, physical attributes, and skill set; and doing the same with an almost clone in Caleb Wilson, I surmised that we were moving away from the smaller FCS offensive style to a larger and more versatile FBS offense; maybe even a Pro Set. I posted such at the time. i always thought that Verhaegh was the more polished and experienced QB, and better suited to see over FBS DLs.
04-cheers

From January:

We just signed a big strong pocket passer in Joey Verhaegh. We are about to sign an almost carbon copy of Verhaegh in Caleb Wilson.

We haven't run a true Oregon like spread in two years. I assumed that eliminating the QB read option last year was an attempt to protect Heinicke, and eliminating the quick strike aspect was to allow more time for Heinicke to see the defense and more time off the clock for our defense.
Additionally, we were compensating for receiver and OL issues.

What we had been running more recently is basically a Bill Walsh West Coast offense from a spread set. The main aspect of this concept is the short accurate pass in lieu of a running game. Some might call it the Air Raid spread.
However, by the end of the last season we were running a much more balanced attack.

I think we discovered in the UMD and later in the Pitt game the limitations of running the quick pass game with a shorter QB and shorter WRs. We just couldn't see over the DL or even the DBs.
Curiously, Colin McElroy, another Heinicke like QB, has been MIA.

Shuler Bentley will run the offense in Heinicke like fashion, scrambling out of the pocket in order to find (see) receivers and extend plays.
The much taller Verheagh and Caleb Wilson likely would not have to scramble as much, however they both have the arms to otherwise run our offense.

With the emergence of Ray Lawry, who was able to run very effectively even with our makeshift OL, and type of the RBs we are now recruiting, we seem to be moving in a different direction.

It looks to me like we will be running more of a pro set in the future.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Verhaegh move ahead of Bentley by the beginning of the season.

Thoughts?

RE: Colin McElroy has left the team.
I know I commented at the time, but I just don't see it. If they were, they wouldn't have gone after Bentley last year (unless they changed recruiting philosophies after recruiting him)

I think they search for the best obtainable QB and will mold the offense to whoever is behind center. I don't see us moving away from 3-4 WR sets. I think Bentley has always been the next QB in line.

I think you commented on this in a similar post in the 2015 Recruiting Den. I was under the impression on both posts that both Joey and Caleb came after SB.

McElroy will grow up and look back on this in 8 years or so with regret. Should've finished that MBA.

With little experience behind Shuler Bentley we all knew that this team will only go as far as he takes us. Keeping Shuler healthy was paramount, now it is even more so.

Its time for Bobby to convert a 4th string DE into a tight end or fullback. Bentley needs the extra beef to block for him.

Precisely the reason why I speculate McElroy decided to walk. Considering size and athleticism of the 2016 QB commits, and his current third string position on the depth chart, he probably figured playing time for him in the future would be close to non-existent. Can't blame the guy, but like someone else noted, wish he had stayed to complete his masters degree.
Good Luck, McElroy, and thanks for having been a Monarch.

That would explain Drayton Arnold, who is smaller, but a true dual threat QB.

I mean there was probably almost zero chance he would have played this year. LaRussa and Washington would both have played first. Not sure why folks are acting like this hurts us.
