UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI
UC could be Top 25 in football, but for mistakes.

Coach Tommy Tuberville has been exasperated by UC turnovers and shaky special teams...

UC quarterback Gunner Kiel threw four interceptions against Temple. Two interceptions were tipped and on another, Tuberville said a receiver ran the wrong route. Still, no excuses....

“The two special teams mistakes (against Temple) were by kids that have never played,” Tuberville said. “It wasn’t that they weren’t giving effort, but it was over-effort. When you’re covering a kickoff sometimes you’ve got to make sure you stay in your lane, you’ve got contain, you do the things right in terms of your coverage responsibility.”

[b]“We’ve got to put guys in there that have done it before, guys that are just going to have to play more.”

Kevin Hyland, a senior linebacker and special teams ace from Elder High School, is one of those. Hyland will rejoin the kickoff team this week, after playing on just the kickoff return and punt return units last week. Starting linebackers Kevin Brown and Eric Wilson are among others expected to play more on special teams.

The first two games they were trying some young guys, and I think some of them had the early-season jitters,” Hyland said. “Being in a brand new stadium for the first time, things may have gotten to them a little bit. They’ll get better with repetitions.”

I think we now have our own version of Tony LaRussa smartest guy in the game.

He really needs to go all Marshawn Lynch and stop answering questions.

If you actually listen to what he is saying and don't just get lulled into the happy spot by the easy southern drawl of the coach straight out of central casting, the things he says in the media are often simply idiotic.

This decision to get kids experience against Temple was crazy. Like I said earlier, stupid should hurt. It did.

What confuses me is that in the week leading up to the game he said they were going to condense the roster, only play experienced guys since it was more of an actual game and less a scrimmage like against Alabama A&M. I guess he meant everywhere except special teams?

Sure gives me a warm-fuzzy knowing that inexperienced players were used in a critical conference divisional game. This from a head coach with 230+ games under his belt and the week leading up to the Temple game said how tough a game this would be.

For all you coaches, how do you get game experience for players that have never played?

What incentive do you give someone that comes to your program and works hard in practice?

Special teams is often where new players are broken in; they made mistakes now they'll sit and learn. Hopefully they'll get more opportunity.

Or go with these gems:

We need to hold the rope

We need to remember to represent the "C"

Can I get a chest-bump..?

I actually think he is answering questions HONESTLY.

Can we resurrect he's playing too much golf and making too many commercials?

How about play them in the 4th quarter with comfortable leads in games against lower competition on the schedule:
Alabama A&M
Miami, OH
Uconn
Tulsa

What he said. One of the "tougher" teams on the schedule has just scored a touchdown giving them a reasonable lead - why do you then have people on the field that appear to have had no idea of what they were doing? 01-wingedeagle

They have an idea, they left their lane and didn't contain. Mistakes were made.

If you aren't sure that they can handle the job (for whatever reason), you don't put them out there in that important of a game. Get them reps against Alabama A&M and Miami (OH). If you're involved in a blowout, get them reps in that situation too. It allows them to make mistakes without it impacting the game on a win/loss level.

My bigger problem is that it's highly common for young, inexperienced guys to be on each teams' special teams units. UC's were terrible and that falls on the coaching staff.

Hell, staying in your lane is the most basic rule of coverage.

NFL take from Mike Tomlin:
Quote:“I spent a lot of time with (special teams coordinator) Danny Smith (on Friday) talking about how to utilize and evaluate young guys in the special teams game,” Tomlin said

http://triblive.com/sports/steelers/8801...z3m6PHMwXA

Another NFL Take:
Quote:“If you aren’t a starter on offense or defense, you better be a starter on special teams…or we don’t have a spot for you.” –Danny Smith, Redskins special teams coach

Rookies should take the advice of coach Danny Smith when it comes to playing a role on special teams in the NFL.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/most-rookie...RzZWMDc3I-

Oklahoma Sophomore Alex Ross, RB lead the nation in kick off returns he is the 2nd team RB

Kansas State freshman kicker Matthew McCrane led the nation last season in field-goal percentage

Speedy Noil Texas A&M WR as a true freshman, he returned 15 punts for 180 yards; his 12-yard average was 9th best

USC CB/WR Adoree Jackson was the Trojans’ No. 1 kick returner in 2014 as a true freshman

Nebraska’s De’Mornay Pierson-El WR a true freshman had 596 yards and three touchdowns as a punt returner in 2014

They should have kept them off the field I guess, or played them against inferior competition.

No defending this silly decision. Alabama A&M, fine. Temple in a conference game, not fine. We got burned being cute

I'm defending using freshman, not the outcome. That falls on the coaching. It's not a silly decision to use true freshman and players that are working their behinds off. As seen by the references above it is a standard practice for the NFL and College.

I'd agree but when I am hearing coaches and players say that these guys were not the first team, benefit of the doubt is toast.

I'd think this was silly even if we didn't lose. They know they effed up. Live and learn.

My problem with it is special teams has been a problem throughout Tuberville's time here and it seems to me not enough emphasis is placed on getting the best guys possible out there. That's a surefire way to lose games where you are the better team.

Tubs says whatever he thinks sounds good at the time...even if it makes no sense and ends up contradicting something he already said or will say down there road.

You can't compare NFL vs. college special teams due to the roster structure being radically different.

There's nothing wrong with playing freshman on ST. In fact, there's a number of them that are legit gamechangers as you pointed out.

The difference is that those guys beat out competition. Tuberville basically admits that he used young, inexperienced guys opposed to better, more experienced guys that have already proven themselves on special teams.
