Good point. Particularly if Memphis has established a consistently winning program, playing teams like Texas or Oklahoma could suck a good deal of oxygen out of the Mid South's SEC bubble.

Depends on how smart the SEC leadership is at the time. First order of business is to secure your base. Allowing another conference into the southeast would be a huge mistake for the SEC. The same way it was a mistake by the Big 12 to let A&M and Missouri go to the SEC.

Agree in theory but as every day goes by the B12 is less stable & less a credible threat to surrounding P5 conferences. So comparing an SEC move into B12 territory by stealing B12 members A&M & Moo is a much bigger threat than a relatively weak B12 move into SEC territory by adding a G5 schools.

Memphis plays Texas in Memphis. Ole Miss plays Alabama in Oxford. Which one has the largest crowd?

Seeing how this is a hypothetical question, I'll say Memphis.

which seats the most?

Stadium expansion now!

Even if we join the B12, the SEC would still have a firm grasp on the Memphis market.

I disagree with you. Memphis has and always will be about Memphis. Other cities probably yes, but not Memphis. All this city has been waiting on is a decent product. We finally have the right people in place.

I would love for you to be right...and I would absolutely not mind being wrong. We'll get a good feel for that on October 17 when Ole Miss comes to the Liberty Bowl. If there are far more Memphis fans in attendance than Ole Miss fans, then I'll agree that maybe things are finally shifting in our favor.

UT should support us for SEC like UVa did for Va Tech.

At least not as long as Ole Miss, Arkansas and Mississippi State's "no" votes are enough to prevent it. I don't imagine Vanderbilt, UT-K or Mizzou would be exactly supportive either.

RE: COnference expansion
The truth is the problem with Memphis football is that it has lousy football fans. There is always an excuse for the lack of attendance. When you go decades with this poor of support it speaks directly to your fan base. You have actualy had people complain about people standing and cheering at games . This is with out a doubt the dumbest f****ing thing I have ever heard of. If not that then it's too cold or too hot as if the temp is different at other stadiums around us. The average price for a ticket to a Memphis football games is only 10 percent of a bUTt chug u ticket and people still complain. It's time to realize that if we as a fan base do not get our sh!t together it's over. Again either get your a$$ to the bowl or shut up about the state of the program. Excuses get you nothing.

I would bet that UT would be forced to support us like they were last time we were up for SEC membership. Vandy was the one who led the charge to block us because the state can't tell them what to do if I remember correctly.

If forced to, they might in public, but 120 years of history says they would impede UofM's progess as far as possible.

As for the notion that the $EC would retain the Memphis market after UofM's entry into the Big 12, they will always have a notable presence, but it would be drastically reduced and subject to further erosion with future generations. It would be ironic if, in the long run, the $EC comes to wish that they HAD invited Memphis. 03-nutkick

RE: COnference expansion
Blame the fans? Right. We have the BEST fans in the entire country. Attendance per win has to be the highest in the nation. Of teams that aren't ranked, have seldom been ranked, have hardly ever gone to a decent bowl, seldom get a visitor that brings more than 50 fans and could quite possibly be one of the worst football programs in history, we show up game after game, year after year.

Just look at any average attendance figures over the last 50 years, if there is such a thing, compare it to any other perennial loser and we are amazingly loyal considering our overall poor record.

Just a few years ago, it was argued right here that Memphis, Rice and Temple were the 3 worst top D1 (or whatever you call it ) football programs in history. We love our school and are eternally optimistic. All we need is a little P5 money in our pocket and we'll kick some a$$.

Somewhat true...Memphis loves a winner.

So if we join the Big XII we will need to have success and compete for championships if we are going to pull people away from their current rooting interests.

The group of guys (4) that I have gone to games with for 30 years have always said that the fact that Memphis STILL drew 20,000+ for games (except for that one bad day) was an amazing stat, all things considered.

RE: COnference expansion
The SEC is never adding Memphis. N-E-V-E-R. However, don't say they won't expand. They have a network now that is printing money, and it makes sense to add states they don't have. The SEC has interest in UNC and Virginia, and if not, then perhaps NC State and Va Tech. They also would take OU, and maybe OSU as a package, if they had no choice.

I would be shocked if they added any team in a state they already have, unless Texas decided to lower its standards, lol. That eliminates FSU, Ga Tech, Memphis, etc.

Another thing. Not saying it would ever happen, but P5 conferences with networks could go as high as 24 teams and make it work. This has actually been considered in the past, although I doubt it ever happens. The point is, don't say the B1G or SEC won't add any more teams. Conferences could make 15 teams (3 divisions of 5), 16 (2 divisions of 8, or 4 of 4), 18 (3 divisions of 6), 20 (4 divisions of 5), and 24 (4 divisions of 6) all work.

The B1G is actively looking to go to 16. If they did, the SEC could follow. But either one is only going to add other P5s from the B12 or ACC, if the GoRs can be overcome. Our hope would be in replacing a team in either the Big 12 or ACC.

A concern of mine is the raided P5 conference, upon us joining as replacement, loses its P5 status.

I am also unsure of the GOR strength in binding conferences together. If I recall properly, it was initially considered ironclad, but lately reports indicate it may have loopholes.

We are on the same page - the way I see it playing out, is the Big 10 goes to 16, followed by the SEC going to 16. This will leave gaps within the Big 12 and/or ACC, which will open the door for our entrance. A Big 12 minus OU/OSU and an ACC minus Va Tech/NC State are still very, very good conferences.

We'll get there, folks - in the meantime, keep showing up and give to the program via TSF and/or the Time to Shine campaign.

Go Tigers!

I always wonder what administration and fans would pick if this scenario happened:

The SEC does expand and take 2 teams out of the ACC......teams in the states of Virginia and North Carolina.

ACC is now looking at Memphis along with a few more teams like Cincy for whatever reason but suddenly the B12 is finally considering adding 2 teams as well and memphis is considered as one of their picks

Which conference would we jump on immediately? B12 or ACC

With each year of an existing contract the value of the GOR is reduced, i.e., using the ACC as an example the GOR was for a fixed period of time. I don't know if there are clauses that extend it year to year but there was at the time of execution a fixed period of the GOR.

Agree, in the OP's linked article, the author seemed to use a logic that geography was a major point of consideration which is contrary to the more accepted view that it is $$ added by gaining a wider foot with a new conference partner that had a large following, i.e., adding market share was the more important factor.
