FS1 is reportedly doing the same thing on Friday night, for the Miami at FAU telecast.
I only watched a few minutes tonight, but it had the same feel as watching NFL Red Zone where the guy in the studio narrates the action. Except, of course, that FS1 was not switching around through six games at once.
It really can't cost that much to fly two guys in. They already have the camera and sound setup.
Maybe they couldn't find a crew who wanted to go to the-middle-of-nowhere Kentucky... That's "Deliverance" type country out there.
Not hardly ! Party Central and a very upbeat area. Sort of a Suburb of Nashville and loaded with Tourist traps with Mammoth Cave, Corvette Museum, Beech Bend Park among other things. Bowling Green is A great college Town.

Cheap: how much does it cost to fly 2 guys into Nashville, rent a car for a drive to Bowling Green, KY ... 3 nights at a hotel and all the incidentals? $5,000 tops?
Low-quality: I can tell, the commentary just isn't as good as it would be with somebody there live. The players deserve a bit better too. This is one of the rare times they are the only college football game on TV, it's probably a tape they'd like to keep as they get older, but it's a lower-quality TV broadcast they'll be getting.

Have you ever been to Bowling Green? It's certainly not "middle-of-nowhere", compared to parts of Eastern Kentucky, which is mostly rural appalachia. Bowling Green's a beautiful town, a great college town, and Western's campus is probably the most scenic in the entire state.

I thought the Corvette museum fell into a sinkhole a few years back? Did they rebuild it?

Um... maybe FS1 knew the game was up against the NFL and decided not to spent unnecessary loot on flights/accommodations/etc.
Sounds like a smart business decision to me. Western Kentucky got airtime, probably more airtime than they received when they beat Vandy.
Win-win.

I don't see a problem with the announcers for the game being at a remote site. This is the information age after all. Telecommuting is already well accepted in society - except among self-absorbed sports fanatics. With HD broadcasts, multiple TV angles, and instant replay, anyone could announce today's games from any location, no matter how remote the location.
Contract local media from both sides to do sideline commentary, and you reduce costs to a minimum. The schools get prime time HD exposure, the network does it on a shoestring budget, and everybody goes home happy at the end of the game = except for the losing team, of course.

The whole museum didn't fall in, just one room. Albeit a large room. As far as I know it has been repaired and is back up and running as normal

Yes, the main gallery reopened a few months ago. Some of the damaged Vettes restoration have been completed but there are still a few to go. They also opened a test track across the highway about a year ago.

I forget exactly how much concrete it took to fill the hole, but it was a couple hundred cubic yards or so.

It was there about 3 years ago when I drove by.

I'm shocked FS1 is even showing that game. Cutting costs by having the announcers call the game via a video feed is nothing new. Bein Sports does this with all of their telecasts. They have a group of announcers that will watch feeds of games from Spain in a Miami, FL studio and they'll call the game that way with only the in-stadium audio included. NBC Sports broadcasts will broadcast the entire local feed of most of their English/Barclay's Premier League games, although they do have two commentators that travel around to select matches that do go to the stadium for US only televised broadcast announcing; they typically call one or two games a weekend.

RE: FS1 has announcers in Los Angeles calling La Tech-WKU game
When ESPN3 really got going and ERT (now ESPN Events) was a bigger deal they had a nice stable of regional announcers (not that all were that good). They had retired coaches and former players living across the south who would do color and the announcers were a mix of radio and TV guys (and I think at least one guy from an ad agency) who contracted to do games. They mostly drove to games because they were regional.
It wasn't unusual to hear one or more of them on Sun Belt and CUSA teleconferences asking questions. You didn't always get a great call but you had announcers who weren't fumbling around trying to figure out who someone was or doling out inane facts from a google search.

FS1 has announcers in Los Angeles calling La Tech-WKU game
There is simply no substitute for actually being at the game. There is so much going on off camera that there's no way you can see enough from a studio. The cost to staff enough camera angles to simulate the experience for the announcers would offset the savings from having hem call it remotely.

One more FS1 comment:
Switching back and forth between the ESPN2 game and FS1 game on Friday night.
At just about every ESPN2 commercial break, they run an ad for Saturday night's Oregon-Michigan State game on ABC.
FS1 isn't promoting any of the Saturday games on Fox or FS1. They are televising games on Saturday -- 3 on FS1 and one on Fox broadcast, actually -- but you can't find that out by watching the Friday night FS1 game. I guess you gotta look it up on the internet to find out what games they're showing tomorrow and when. SMH.

Not sure what you are talking about, I've seen them promote Iowa vs. Iowa State atleast a few times during commercial breaks and they just promoted all 4 football games for tomorrow during the game.

RE: FS1 has announcers in Los Angeles calling La Tech-WKU game
I may be in the minority on this one ... but frankly, I can't stand announcers for telecasts of games. They almost never say anything I didn't already know from watching. Very rarely. And they're annoying.
I don't get it. Why can't you just have the image of the game and the sounds of the stadium?
It's like someone, years and years ago, decided that people were only used to hearing games on the radio, so when telecasts came into existence ... they were worried people would be lost without something like a radio voice-over of the game on top of the images.
So that said, I love the "Spider-cam" feed that ESPN offers sometimes on Apple TV. No announcers! Just the game and the stadium sounds.

In that case, pipe in the local feed and their talkers and call it a day. Otherwise, most heads aren't Schoen and Ray freaking Hudson and BGKY isn't some Third World mudhole with a field surrounded by razor wire a la Saprissa in Costa Rica or one of these other CONCACHAMPS sites where a light sprinkle knocks out the stadium power. I can get travel logistics difficulties in that case.

I'm down with that. If I'm locked into a game, I'm usually not even listening to the talking heads, so I don't even get the complaints about them. It's like...are you watching the game or what?

Guys like John Sanders and Keith Morehouse did a lot of these games. Matt Stewart also. He was a big CSS guy before that network went under.

You are blasted with FS1 and FOX college football commercials on their FSN regional MLB broadcasts.
