Wow, major buzz-kill. He was a consensus top 100 player nationally and Top 50 on ESPN's rankings. I believe this means Rice now has 4 open scholarships for 2016 ... 2 that are not being used right now, 1 that Hall just vacated, and 1 more after Guercy graduates.

I wonder if Rice is completely out of the mix now, or whether he just wanted to explore other options? I notice he used the word "reopen" rather than "decommit," though that is probably just me being overly-precise with language.

Damn! These college basketball recruits, I tell ya, they can't make up their minds! Hall seemed in love with Rice, everything he said on twitter, etc. Why did he commit so early? Oh well. I trust Rhodes will only continue to improve our recruiting, but this is a bummer.

Either way, I am sure Rhoades hasn't given up.

His Dad had been at a number of our home games last year so I am left with the thought that there is some heavy negative recruiting going on from another school.

Why would he want to go to another school where he would be just another cog in the machine, instead of Rice, where he could be basketball royalty?!?

I can't imagine what the negatives would be: Coach Rhoades? Nope. A Rice education? Nope. The beautiful Rice campus? Nope The facilities? Nope. the Rice co-eds? Well....I don't know how much this has changed, but Rice is still in Houston, and things in the city ain't too shabby.

If Hall is exploring his options now, well, that's his choice, but if he can't see all that Rice has to offer, and wants to go to a lesser school, then, well can't keep them in a cage. I have confidence Coach Rhoades.

At this point the only negative I can see relates to the size of our basketball crowds, and overall fan atmosphere/intensity at the games. Although we saw some definite improvement last year, we're still way short of the crowd sizes other programs can offer. I always worry that ends up being a turnoff for kids attending games as part of their campus visits.

Early expectation is that Tudor season tickets could be close to 2000 for this coming season....and I suspect we'll have a much more consistent and strong student turnout.

With him and the two PG's that are freshmen now (Lott, Evans) we'll have three 3-star PG's next year, all measure at least 6'2.

Yup that's the one. Thanks noodle. I hope it's an alternate or something but I doubt it. Not very happy about moving away from the old English R, it just looks very boring.

I'll wait to see them in person before passing judgement. I think sometimes we go overboard on the Old English R as it doesn't work with everything (some of our slogans for instance - using that font for the letter R in the middle of a word that all the other letters are in Times Roman).
