RE: Week 2 vs. Norfolk State
I'm really looking forward to this one. I want to see how SB performs at home for the first time. A 125-YD, 2 TD follow-up for RL could be in the cards, along with a few key defensive plays from FM, TW, and OX.

RE: Week 2 vs. Norfolk State
Against EMU, the defense certainly had its moments and came through when needed the most, but I expected the scoring defense to be significantly better (less than 20 points given up). This week we are at home against NSU, an unranked FCS team. I hope to see the defense rise to the ocassion and hold this green and gold team to two TDs or less.

RE: Week 2 vs. Norfolk State
This is an important week for the offense. I think the staff and Bentley are still learning what works best. I'm expecting a wide open playbook. Probably a couple of mistakes but a few big plays as well. I'd also like to see Lawry get a bit of a break ahead of the toughest stretch schedule wise.

I expect Coach Wilder to play it close to his chest again this week. Still isn't time to show off the good stuff.

Please remember not to cheer too loudly. The NSU fans don't like it...

I dont think we are holding anything back, we just have a freshman QB running things. We will run the zone read with WR screen option a lot. More will be added as the QB gets more experience and comfort running our base plays
This is kind of a sandwich spot/look ahead game vs a team thats game of the year is this week. I expect it to be sorta tight early on and us to pull away. We finally have te abity to sub in quality defensive lineman as we saw on Saturday.

We are not running a zone read option, and haven't in at least a couple of years.
Few of our plays (maybe goal line or short ydg, but we would have to ask a coach to be sure) are designed to allow SB to run. In any event, in those situations it is likely a called run and not a read option.
To be defined as a zone read option (double option) there is a zone blocking scheme that essentially ignores defenders and allows the QB to decide whether to run or hand off. With a zone blocking scheme, even if the QB hands off most of the time, he will take a lot of hits.
We are not going to do that.

Yes we do. We run inside zone over and over. Its the play they run when they check run/pass option. Inside zone doesnt mean the qB has option to hold the ball but often he does hve option. (Think once yesterday)

RE: Week 2 vs. Norfolk State
An inside zone run is NOT necessarily a zone read option, neither is a WR screen pass option.
By definition a Zone Read Option is a double option whereby the QB can hand off or keep and run, based on the direction (inside or outside) of the zone blocking.
I have not seen us run a Zone Read Option in a few years. Even TH didn't run vertically unless all other options were exhausted. and there was nowhere else to go. In other words a busted play.

On the inside zone we run, Bentley has the option to run inside zone to Lawry, hold ball and take off, or throw the screen outside. We run it all the time and saw all 3 options yesterday. The QB doesnt hang on to the ball more than once a game or so bc we havent had traditional running QBs, but its still an option. Its more used to keep the defense honest when the DE starts crashing down.

As I recall, SB kept it on the option for about a 20 yard gain in the spring game.

If that is true then we need to work on play logistics.
1) First, I only saw Bentley run once, and at the time it that did not APPEAR to be a designed zone run from the read. It looked like a quick pass play whereby his receivers were all covered so he took off. It was for like 5 yards deep in EMU territory or something?
2) If that WR screen is part of an extended option for the zone read, then we really need to work on disguise because it seems to be a first option designed screen, not a tertiary option for the zone read.
In any event it won't keep defenses honest. Despite the set, it is not an inside zone read if the QB is not required to make a read in order to determine his course of action, and I have not seen anything that would contradict that; and neither will opposing coaches. I don't think we have enough depth at QB right now to start subjecting Bentley to the hits he would take on the runs. Opposing coaches will know that as well.
