Capacity for our stadium (until the 2017 expansion occurs) is 22k. Fire Marshall came down hard on us... i mean the attendance still sucks, but efforts are being made. Hell they even have a rewards app for students now to check in at the games and earn gift cards and souvenirs from the campus gift shops. Whatever it takes man...

I have to keep a running log of excuses for crappy attendance:
-"Everybody was at the bar at the moment that picture was taken."
-"We're a pro-sports town..."
-"Dude, the Fire Marshal wouldn't let anyone else in!"

NIU ought to try what Cincinnati did back in the 70's... Hide a full keg of beer somewhere in the stadium and tell the fan(s) that whoever finds it, keeps it.
Much more incentive than "Free Tuition."

You guys really gonna pick on N Illinois over that? They're attempting to put butts in the stands, and save their STUDENTS some money, you know so tuition isn't such the problem that it is at nearly every major college or university? Not everyone is as privileged financially like some of the Universities in the American or the students that go to them.

We (ECU) can pick on G5 attendance all we want.

An Eastern Michigan fan (surprised that those exist seeing that EMU has the lowest attendance in FBS every year) is defending NIU. No surprise there, but it's good to see that you also support Sparty. Which is what any sane man would do in order to counter watching atrocious EMU football.

What good does it do to use schemes to get people to come to games........ if they really do not care anything about the game?

So do you think that NIU is willing to forego tuition revenue for the sole purpose of driving football attendance; just to stay in the MAC?

Depends. I didn't get to read the article, but in general, I'm fine with gimmicks designed to get students to try the football stadium experience. If your product is good and the students have fun---then maybe they come back on their own---which in turn increases the chances these students become season ticket buyers after graduation. If they don't come to games while in school, the chances of them buying season tickets after graduation is virtually zero.
In general, this is why I don't think MAC schools would be good additions for the AAC---as a group, they have the lowest attendance average in all of FBS---even lower than the Sunbelt. My feeling is that in order for the AAC to take the next step in media growth---becoming a true "tweener" conference (with a paycheck to match)---the AAC needs to approach or surpass 40K as its average football attendance. I don't think any MAC schools will aid in that effort.

My Division III college opens tonight under the lights. They could offer free tuition and I would still probably watch real college football on my laptop instead.

What if they offered a free new TV?

You also then understand the cost of attending a University then as well right? It's a great way to get students INVOLVED with the presence of the university and convince many to keep coming back even after graduating, how about go after the G5 schools who are being lazy about getting fans and students at their games or create policies that could turn people away (SMU is great at doing so Football wise unfortunately). I will never blame a school for trying or insult them for gimmicks or rewards for coming to the games.

Eh, grew up a Sparty fan, only pay attention to games against Michigan, Ohio State, and Wisconsin. More ties to Eastern and am one of those attendees that make up the lowest attendance in FBS every year. I've watched many games that Eastern lost that I've enjoyed, being a fan means you stick by your team regardless not just be happy when they are good and then ***** and moan when they have a bad or terrible season. Eastern and its coach are trying to change the atmosphere of the Football Program, even the ones who should have gave up by now keep fighting to be better.
