I thought there were restrictions on this sort of thing. I could see some basketball schools with weak football misusing this. Indiana, Georgetown, etc. It seems they could have 20 scholarship level players on the squad - 13 BB, 7 FB (wink, wink, nudge nudge).
I always thought Fuda gave up his FB when he went full time baseball.
But assuming you are correct, any idea why Bailiff would have refused this option to JJ when he has done it for others in the past?
Admittedly, Fuda was a special case since he got injured early in football, and could no longer play, but I'm pretty sure he remained on football scholarship. I believe the Fuda decision was pre-Bailiff. Lewis I'm less sure about the specifics.

Was not a Bailiff decision to make. You have to give up your scholarship for a sport to play another sport full time (and thus no longer play the original sport).

I'm not nearly as close to the program as you are, but this surprised me. I thought there were NCAA policies about kids being on football scholarship and not actually playing football. My understanding is that if they play FB and another sport, their scholie has to count against football, but not if they play only another sport.
In Lewis's case, I thought after his was not able to lock down the starting role, he dec ided to concentrate on baseball only, and probably was awarded a partial baseball scholie and some nonathletic financial help that effectively brought him up to a full ride. Just an impression, no knowledge.

Unfortunately, unlike other schools (e.g., TCU, Baylor, DBU, Vandy), Rice does not have other financial aide packages to supplement the partial baseball scholarships and, consequently, our baseball recruiting has suffered the past couple seasons (this year's incoming class, and the next 2 years of commitments). DBU and Vandy provide African-American financial aide over and above the meager baseball scholarship money, and both TCU and Baylor have succeeded in getting their schools to supplement the partial scholarships with robust financial aide packages. Rice has refused to follow suit to date. It is my understanding that we have recently lost a couple elite recruits to TCU and Baylor for this very reason, despite our offering a larger partial baseball scholarship. It's a BIG issue for Rice baseball, and one that is in the process of being escalated.

I realize it's a tough call for Rhoades to award a scholarship to Jones for three years - especially when he has only one senior on the roster this year and the roster is so freshmen and sophomore heavy. But he's entering this season with just 11 scholarship players so we're down 2 to most teams in that category. I think he would have gotten one for sure if he was a senior or maybe even a junior. And I hope we are using our full scholarship allotment by next season.

That was one helluva of a good game to watch
Edit: Montana scores a TD with :02 left to win 38-35. Nice crowd in the stands. Good game.

OT-Western Kentucky at Vandy is a push according to the bookmakers. A little surprising IMHO.

NDSU's D was on the field for 92 plays. In years past that was probably 2 games worth. With the smokey air from the nearby fires that must have been tough.

I'm going to combine 2 of the bigger blowouts of the 2008 season, against some exceedingly weak opponents. Taking the lower score for the winner and loser:
Owls 56
Seahawks 20

Hmm you couldn't have made it 77-10?
On a related note, it appears in my earlier prediction that I picked a score equal to the entire Owls points scored in the 2009 season, and added a field goal.

Nah, I felt like the blowouts of UNT and SMU that year could be similar to the difference between the these 2 teams this year. I'm going with the lesser. I'm going with the lesser of the scores (as SMU made a few lucky plays early), and the UNT game was one example of a blowout enhanced by defensive TD returns rather than Bailiff intentionally running up the score.

Ah, yes, Arnaud Gascon-Nadon and the pick six int from the defensive end position. Too bad he didn't stay.

RE: Wagner Prediction Thread
Somewhere I read that Wagner lost last year at FAU something like 38-7.
So I will go with a Rice win 45-13, to beat the 31 theoretical point-spread.
Wishful thinking?

I really, really hope that we can score more than 45 points. I don't necessarily want to drop 60 on Wagner, but we should be able to eclipse 50. I hope...

Actually it was FIU and Wagner lost 34-3. We won at FIU 31-17 in a game that wasn't that close.
