It's a waste of time

Gun control isn't about giving up your gun or your right to own one. It's about trying to keep guns out the hands of those people that don't deserve to have one.

How would any of the proposed laws by you gun control freaks kept a gun out of Flanagan's hands? Please provide the specific proposed law. Thanks!

Is there not a way to use a medical database to determine if someone with a mental issue should not be allowed to purchase a gun?

Even if there was, where there is a will, there is a way. No law is going to change that.

I won't speak for anyone in particular, but most leftists don't care about saving lives, they just want more "feel good legislation" to score political points against us "right wing gun nuts". They just want something to say they "won".

There is always a way to beat the system. It's upsetting however when someone like this goes on a rampage after purchasing a gun and everybody and their uncle say, " Oh yeah the guy was nuts".

If a person has had a history of anger issues, bi polar or mental problems, he should not be allowed to purchase a gun. But hey I'm crazy like that.

Propose an idea to keep guns out of 'crazy' people's hands without infringing on the rights of everybody else. The problem lies in the diagnosis, and who gets to make the decision.

I don't understand why this is a gun issue at all. It's a race a discrimination issue.

The perp was a smart, evil, cunning pos. He wasn't crazy or bi polar. He had anger issues, narcissistic issues where he has to be the center of all.
While he acted like a victim, he was the bully at work and treated co-workers very poorly. No reasonable gun restriction law would have stopped him from getting and gun and murdering people.

I agree.

Now how do we accomplish this goal without A. unduly burdening millions of legal gun owners B. creating the first step to gun confiscation - a national gun database and C. ensuring the anti-gun politicians and/or doctors don't use underhanded tactics such as extremely liberal interpretation of the law as defacto gun control?

Oh, and how exactly would it have prevented the shooting we have been discussing in this thread? You never answered when I inquired if Flanagan was under professional care for his mental issues, so if you could answer that as well.

I already did. If you have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder or have had documented anger issues, you should not be allowed to purchase a gun.

Shut down the open air gun market (oops I mean gun show) for starters. Make all purchasers and sellers of firearms conduct those sales under the authority of the police and retain records of who has the guns and where they are location. Hold gun owners strictly liable (civilly and criminally) for acts committed with their firearms if they are neglegent or careless (not securing their weapon).

Tom, that will create a huge underground black market, and in essence make criminals out of people who are not criminals.

Every adult citizen is the USA is already held to criminal/civil negligence laws, be that serving minors alcohol, wrecking your auto into another, or doing something stupid with a gun...accidental shooting etc.

The majority of gun murders are gang banging drug dealing city thugs.
The problem is not law abiding sportsman and collectors.

You keep supposing that those who wish to disarm the law-abiding have some benign or higher purpose.

They don’t.

They want to disarm the populace to make them easier to subdue.

The Aurora Theater, Newtown School and Accent Signage shooters (in Minneapolis) had histories of mental health problems but had not been formally committed.

You cannot commit someone to a mental institution based on gossip or rumor or a parent’s concerns or even a diagnosis of bi-polar disorder because being committed for mental illness means the patient is locked up as securely as if he were being sent to prison.

The law requires a judge to rule that the person is a danger to himself or others at that moment, based on admissible evidence from the patient’s history. Fear that the patient might someday snap is not admissible evidence.

This sets a high standard of proof to deprive a person of his liberty and makes civil commitment difficult.

Can we please never, ever, see the words ‘American culture of gun violence’ again without detailing who among Americans is part of this ‘culture of gun violence’?

Hint: it ain’t middle-aged NRA members.

Make all purchasers and sellers of firearms conduct those sales under the authority of the police and retain records of who has the guns and where they are location. Hold gun owners strictly liable (civilly and criminally) for acts committed with their firearms if they are neglegent or careless (not securing their weapon).

You keep supposing that those who wish to disarm the law-abiding have some benign or higher purpose.

They don’t.

They want to disarm the populace to make them easier to subdue.

The authorities were able to determine he bought the gun legally and that he did not have any history of mental illness. How would the proposed law have stopped this?

The problem is not law abiding sportsman and collectors.

Can we please never, ever, see the words ‘American culture of gun violence’ again without detailing who among Americans is part of this ‘culture of gun violence’?

Hint: it ain’t middle-aged NRA members.

And more people are murdered by a weapon of blunt force, knife, than mass shooters. But this stuff gets the headline.

See post #339. We're going in circles.

Of course you are. He's a Troll. It's what he does. He knows that the VA shooter had no history of mental illness. He knows he bought the gun legally. Nothing could have stopped this. It's already illegal to murder someone, that didn't stop him. He just is latching on to the 'Do Something' crowd who has no specifics. Perfect for him to Troll

Yeah I've been warned
