It has happened at least for the last 10 years. :-) Although this seems to be the best participation I've seen in that time.

Well, that seems about par for the course for me...about 10 years behind the trend.
Good to see that long line though.

Yeah be a fan of your own institution first and foremost if anything. I never understood the logic behind attending one school while cheering for another especially since there's nothing stopping individuals from attending their university of choice.

That's a completely inaccurate statement...there can be plenty of factors stopping individuals from attending their first preferred university.

And yet his point remains the same.

Yeah I really don't mind if students/alumni root for more than one team (unless it's alabama), but there shouldn't be any doubt about where your true loyalty lies.

That is super cool! So much for the argument that the students don't care about UAB. The UAB campus is evolving folks, and for the better.

I wouldn't term it "completely" inaccurate: if it were such, then the opposite would be true, i.e. "Everything would stop individuals from attending his/her university of choice." The truth exists somewhere in the middle of the two extremes. But, I get both points. I agree with kd's sentiment, though.

Like love between individuals, school loyalty is learned from positive experiences, not leveraged by attendance. I have become a UAB fan though I attended in 1970-72 before any sport was being played, any mascot was designed or any school colors were voted.

I didn't say it was completely opposite, I said it was completely inaccurate. It is 100% inaccurate. His statement said "There is NOTHING stopping..." That was an absolute statement that was incorrect, and therefor it was completely inaccurate. Because he said that there is "NOTHING" stopping somebody, and there are in fact things that do stop some people...his "statement" is 0% accurate or 0% true.

We're in the weeds here. The point was trying to make is if a person is the biggest fan of a certain university and is college bound one would think that individual would apply to that university where they can participate in all the activities that are offered including wearing school colors, t-shirts, jerseys, and so on.
In high school your are literally forced to attend your zoned school unless you pay a couple grand a year to attend a out-of-zone school or private institution. The new private school legislation digs into that a little but for the most part we are still on the zoned school standard. In college you get to select your institution, so all things being equal a very small percentage of people will choose to attend Auburn University if they are Alabama fans, or attend Alabama State University if they are Alabama A&M fans....see the trend. Nothing is 100%!

RE: UAB Student Shirt Swap
There are many reasons for attending a particular college. Scholarship money made available, selected area of major study (architecture vs mineral engineering), social reasons (a girl who grew up BAMA went to AU because her boyfriend went there), acceptance letters, family budgetary concerns and so many others in addition to sports preference.

That is correct but try wearing a Alabama A&M t-shirt on Alabama State campus for a week or two and see what happens. Same thing for the other schools I mentioned in the previous post.

Sure there are, but pull for the school you went to.
I'm damn glad to see so much esprit de corps on campus, because Lord knows we all know UAB alums who seem ashamed of that fact.
