RE: USA Today Sun Belt Preview
Thanks for posting. Good write up but USA's LB Jimmie Gipson tore his Achilles earlier this summer and is out for the year. Big loss for the Jags
Quote:South Alabama LB Jimmie Gipson. With so many new faces on this defense, the Jaguars will need Gipson to create pressure from his hybrid-rush position. He did just that at times in 2014.

not bad, although I disagree about the best linebacker unit, Apps loaded at that position, the best, deepest unit on a team whose defense finished 1st in SBC, if there is a better unit than that one, we have some hell of defenses in the SBC.

Pretty good write up. He gave a couple of backhanded mentions to us possibly upsetting UGA in November, I hope he's helping speak it into existence.

According to his chart, he also thinks we only return 5 starters on Defense.

Ya, I noticed that - did they count starters differently?

Yes, some backhanded comments through out, though we're not looking for sugar coating.
Not as detailed as when Myerberg wrote his own team-by-team run down, but still better than most assessments.

Honestly, I think it's just a data entry mistake. Every other publication/review I've seen refers to our returning 10 starters on both offense and defense.

Only one error and a small one for ASU. We have 6 returning starters, not 5. Still, he has 3 of those and Rocky Hayes on his first team SBC defense and has us as the best DL with ULM tied. He is paying more attention than a lot of people it seems.
ASU related observations. The top LB group at ULM consists of three kids from Arkansas, none of whom were offered by ASU. Goes to show that recruiting is not a science. Also, 4 of the top 6 assistants have strong ties to ASU. Ruse was OC for a LONG time in Jonesboro, Siskey cut his teeth at ASU, John Thompson coached and grew up in the area of ASU and of course Walt Bell is the current OC.

App State has a good defense and returning that many people is a good sign (for you at least). I would like to point out though that you had the #1 defense in yards allowed and we had the #1 defense in points allowed... I'll take the points over yards any day of the week
However, I don't doubt your defense could easily be the best in the belt next season.

For a defense that allowed 28 points per game and 411 yards per game last year, I for one was surprised to see 4 Arkansas State guys on the 1st team defense.

I like being discounted. It will be the first time in three years that the Cajuns are not hyped up to be world beaters.
No mention of Elijah McGuire or the leagues most physically dominate WR Jamal Robinson. It should be an interesting year.

Much like App, we were 2 different teams in the first and second half last year. Javon Jones emerged and made freshman All-America but he missed most of the second half. Chris Humes is our best safety and he missed the second half of the year. Xavier Woodson is a freak at LB that just has to control his attitude. Rocky Hayes is a fantastic athlete at CB.
We gave up 20 per game the first 6 and 35 per game the last 6 and the first six included our 3 toughest opponents.
