Due to academic issues, Georgia Southern starting quarterback Kevin Ellison has been suspended for the first two games of the 2015 season. Ellison ran for 1,096 yards and threw for 1,001 yards last season, accounting for 17 total touchdowns.

Ellison was named Second Team All-Sun Belt last season and was named preseason Second Team All-Sun Belt leading into this season.

Ellison will be eligible to return to action in the Eagles’ home game against The Citadel on Sept. 19.


Out for WVU and WMU.

Favian Upshaw is capable, but I don't think he possesses the "it" factor.

WVU was going to win anyway... Western Michigan on the other hand should be very happy about this.

Can't have your leader setting an example like that. Assuming Upshaw plays relatively well, may as well keep him as the starter even when Ellison returns. Ellison should have to earn his spot back from scratch.

Never heard of a few game suspension for academics, usually that is a full semester deal. So he's academically eligible per NCAA but GS has higher standards?

This is about progress toward graduation. It is an nCAA suspension. Originally it was 4 games but Ellison took extra classes this summer and the NCAA suspension per their guidelines was reduced to 2 games[/code]

How will this affect your APR?

Hopefully GS can still give WVU a good show and beat WMU. I know one man doesn't make a team but Ellison runs the offense so well. Good luck Eagles hope you still rep us good in OOC games.

With Ellison, I thought we had a good chance. Without him I think things can easily get out of hand. Ellison plays with a ton of confidence which is what you need from your QB in a game like this.

Found the requirements but not the punishment guidelines, I always thought it was all or nothing for a semester.

Although this IS the NCAA we're talking about here.

14.4.3.1.6 Additional Requirements—Football. [FBS/FCS] In football, a student-athlete who is a member of the institution’s football team and who does not successfully complete at least nine semester hours or eight quarter hours of academic credit during the fall term or does not earn the Academic Progress 2015-16 Division I – August 165 14Eligibility Rate eligibility point for the fall term (or does not successfully complete either requirement) shall not be eligible to compete in the first four contests against outside competition in the following playing season. (Adopted: 4/28/11 effective 8/1/11, Revised: 5/28/13)
14.4.3.1.6.1 Regaining Eligibility for Two Contests. [FBS/FCS] A student-athlete who is ineligible, pursuant to Bylaw 14.4.3.1.6, to compete in the first four contests of a playing season against outside competition may regain eligibility to compete in the third and fourth contests of that season, provided he or she successfully completes at least 27 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of academic credit before the beginning of the next fall term. A student-athlete in his or her initial year of full-time collegiate enrollment may use credit hours earned at the certifying institution during the summer prior to initial full-time enrollment and credit hours earned during the summer following the regular academic year to satisfy the 27 semester/40 quarter credit-hours requirement.
