General William Tecumseh Sherman & Union solders defended train depot from Confederates forces with most of town being burned to the ground, Collierville TN - Circa 1863
While traveling to Chattanooga, General Sherman departed Memphis on a train that arrived at the Battle of Collierville, Tenn., while the Union garrison there was under attack on October 11, 1863. General Sherman took command of the 550 men and successfully defended against an attack of 3,500 Confederate cavalry.

Last Three Confederate Veterans in Lauderdale County preparing to travel to Memphis for a United Confederate Veterans Reunion, Ripley TN - Circa 1920
On the right is Lewis Nelson, an African American volunteer for the CSA. In the center is William Ball Drake.
Drake (center) served in the 1st Virginia Artillery and was Lauderdale County's last Confederate veteran when he died in 1938 at age 92.

Coleman Elementary. Class was dismissed and I remember leaving school, down the stairs and on the sidewalk. Just a kid, but it hit me that everything had changed. Very vivid memory.
