Kansas - BB will probably save their bacon
With the eventual demise of the Big12 coming, it's fortunate that Kansas developed a strong BB program to make them more attractive to a P5 conference. FB is definitely not their forte; however, with BB they will likely get picked up by the B1G. BTN will need some BB content in the off season. No need for any AAC or Mountain West schools for further P5 expansion.

Kansas basketball is one of the most sought after programs in all of college athletics. Outside of Kentucky basketball, name me another college basketball team that can get over 1 million viewers?

BB along with academics make them a good fit for any power conference right now. They literally border PAC, B1G, and SEC right now so would be a geographic fit for everyone but the ACC but who cares about geography if you get KU vs Cuse, Louisville, Duke, UNC, etc... They might be the most universal fit for any conference looking to expand.

Sorry,
Too many of you keep saying that Football drives the bus. That means no Conference will take their historically poor Football just to get their Basketball. If that is the case, then New Mexico/Temple/UMass is a P5 school also. Think before you post

being an AAU school basketball and they have played in a BCS bowl .
How many football teams can be strong at any given time in a conference.
South Carolina is up Tennessee is down for example .
Hard for PSU,OSU,UM and Nebraska all to have great years.
PSU would have been independent in the past.
Nebraska 1 or 2 in the Big eight .
UM and OSU 1 or 2 in the B1G .
Now those four are in the same conference .
So it is impossible for them to maintain historical win levels.

Should football be completely separate from all sports for a conference? We could see a better set up like we do with Hockey. Have a football league that only concerns football.
Kansas could join the Big 10 for all sports except for football. All football go Independent and reform under regions.
We could see this.
Northwest Football Conference
Southwest football Conference
South Plains Football Conference
North Plains Football Conference
Midwest Football Conference
Southeast Football Conference
MidAtlantic Football Conference
Northeast Football Conference
Take all the best schools and put them in the region where they belong. This could include some of the top FCS schools, and some D2 schools.
Reform the leftovers for regular conferences.

Football drives the bus. Football ISN'T the bus. No conference is going to choose, say, Boise State or East Carolina over Kansas because the latter has crummy football. Kansas basketball is a national brand, one of few around. No chance they get left at the altar.

I pointed this out on another thread. FB is king. We get that. But in 2013 (the last year I have numbers fully calculated) basketball drew more total viewers, regular season and overall, than football. Football makes more money, but basketball is very important as well.

They were almost a member of the Big East Conference.

That's a deflection.
If we are speaking of Kansas only, they went to the Orange Bowl in 2007, but lets be real, the last time they went to any Bowl of note was the Orange Bowl, all the way back in 1969!
If they are going anywhere, it is the B1G and I agree with a lot of people here, but they DON'T want another Purdue/Northwestern/Indiana situation in Football. They have not even won their Conference outright since 1930! You think that they can win the Big Ten or the SEC? Please post you answer.

Stony Brook have a much better football team that is winning, good basketball, and play other sports that the Big 10 could look at down the road in the future. I don't see Kansas or Iowa State going anywhere right now.

Kansas belongs in the B12.
Geographically.
Culturally.
Competitively.
Media Marketly.
Academically.
Budgetarily.

As it should be. It would be a shame to waste bacon.

I don't want to be mean, but you post stuff that is total fantasy BS. It is obvious that by in large you 'don't get it' when it comes to, well, pretty much anything college sports or the business of college sports.

RE: Kansas - BB will probably save their bacon
Someone around here (forget who) recently made the astute observation that football isn't really all that "inherently" more valuable that basketball. Rather, the reason it does drive the bus in realignment is because of the structure of their respective post-seasons. The football post-season is controlled by the FBS conferences, specifically the Power conferences, who allocate the great bulk of the money to themselves. So that makes a school that boosts a conference's football very valuable.
In contrast, the NCAA controls the basketball post-season in the name of the entirety of Division I, not just FBS, such that, even with the credits a conference earns for advancing teams in the tournament, the overall money is divided up far more "socialistically", with the lesser conferences (including the FCS conferences) getting a much larger share of the money than with football. So that makes boosting a conference's basketball brand comparatively less valuable.
As for Kansas, I am torn by them. Should the Big 12 collapse and Kansas is in the position of looking for a home, i think they probably find one in a P5, meaning the B1G. But it's not a sure thing, maybe 60-40 in their favor? It is possible they could get left out. They aren't Iowa State or Texas Tech, but they also aren't Texas or Oklahoma.

They make a decent #16 as long as no ACC schools are available. Great BB program but hard to see how they add 40 mil to a conferences bottom line. Similar to but a little above UConn probably.

The B1G has proven canny at bringing new members along very slowly in terms of collecting a full share of that money. What's this, Nebraska's fifth year in the league, and they still aren't getting a full cut?
I imagine that if Kansas joined the B1G under duress as part of a Big 12 collapse, they would get far less than the full cut to begin with and it would take many years until they are getting that $40 million.

True
My point is that it's hard to see how ku adds 40 mil, or whatever that number will be a few years down the road, to the bottom line of the conference. I don't see a few years of reduced payouts making up for it.
