Can't do much with talent when your coach is soft and treats practice like summer camp.
He has some very unusual ideas, maybe even flaky, about a lot of things that is for sure, and may have hurt the team, more than help last year.
The biggest issues the A-State fans I have talked to have are that the coaches were not very aggressive, or successful in correcting the d-line ( and the center position on the OL, and FG kicking) issues, going into this past year and it cost them big-time. Their DL JC signee was a total bust (as was their JC signee at center), and their top freshman DL signee (who was not that highly touted anyway) was not eligible, so they really did essentially nothing to fix obvious problems. They did go after a couple of players that would have helped on the DL but they signed elsewhere(GaSo and Temple I think).
To add insult to injury the coaches using the short comings in the d-line (and sub-par play at center on the OL) as excuses for their teams collapse ever since the end of last year.
It does appear they have learned their lesson, and have been very, very aggressive in trying to shore up any short comings, anywhere going into this year.
They have the most talented team in the SBC, but their coaches are a concern at this point.
