OT: North Dakota name change
We're having a fun chat on the Astate board about this so I thought I'd post it here for some further random summer football thread

University of North Dakota, one of the last holdouts of their native american name (fighting Sioux) finally retired their name two years ago; they've been referred to simply as "North Dakota" with no name to allow "healing" over the subject.

They've now begun to discuss naming a new mascot, and recently narrowed the names down to five possibilities...

-Fighting Hawks
-Nodaks
-North Stars
-Roughriders
-Sundogs

what makes this story further ridiculous, one of the names dropped from consideration (North Dakota) is now being vehemently demanded to be put back on the list for consideration, with many threatening to protest and rally if it isn't done so

Here's the link to the full story and video here
http://www.kfyrtv.com/home/headlines/KFY...=phone&c=y

I'm sure I can speak for the both Astate and ULM fans that went through our retirement of the name Indians and to red wolves and warhawks we're certainly glad our selection process didn't turn negative (and rather stupid) like UND

Since the Dakota people are a Native American tribe, isn't it reasonable to ask that the state change its name?

I personally say the "Natives" such a broad term it can't be used against them. That way they can keep the same mascot, colors, and traditions

It didn't hurt that back in 1999 the two lawyers running the main AState site saw the first Redskins case go against the team and concluded the clock was ticking on the use of Indians and began advocating using a wolf as an alternate logo (school ignored) and began using wolf images on their site. Softened the ground some.

They should switch to North Dakota Cavalry since that's who drove the Sioux from their land.

The Sioux Nation should sue the NCAA if they back North Dakota with the Fighting Sioux moniker. Which if I remember correctly they did support the name.

The Sioux should Sioux the NCAA? What cause of action would they perSioux? I'm not sure if that's a Siouxper idea.
I'd be Siouxprised if the lawsuit went anywhere, honestly.

They had support from one tribe, but needed more.

The gist of it was that they needed both Sioux tribes to support the name to keep it. One tribe did, but the other decided against it at their peace pipe conference years and years ago. The vote was disputed by certain tribe members, but a second vote was not had, despite calls for it.

NoDak should just go with no nickname.

A symbol, like Prince.....kind of a big rectangle with some squiggly lines......then the official name would be that symbol.....and everyone would call them the "symbol formerly known as the "fighting--can't say its"

That would really screw with the alma mater song....

RE: OT: North Dakota name change
The story going around was that ND tried to convince the leadership that the school would adopt a number of programs good for them if they would vote for it.

Leadership of the tribe supposedly said, "You added the studies program we requested years ago to the bulletin but never offer the required classes, you promised us this much in scholarships dedicated for members and never delivered. We don't trust you."
