you know you actually must play the games and win them before you can make your reservations for Orlando. I know its just a formality with you guys, but, just thought I would mention it.

I think all we have to do to get to Orlando is to win at least 6 games and not make the Access Bowl.

If ECU is the AAC representative for Cure, App gets the nod over Southern if we're within 2 wins of each other.

Highly doubtful. You better win more than 6.

It's an in-state school game and we have higher attendance and a bigger national brand than Georgia Southern.

You guys didn't travel near as well as our fans did last year. Geographically we are also a lot closer to Orlando than you are. And no, you don't have a bigger national brand than Georgia Southern. How are you measuring this? I think we'll get the nod over you no matter who the other team is.

In 2007 I would have agreed with you, but right now? After defeating UF and last year's running the conference table and all the press and TV exposure GS got? I don't think so... the perception of the public is very much in the now for both programs.

With that having been said, that can change in one day.... for example, if you beat Clemson you'll get big-time coverage and all that will change.

Appalachian State has a bigger national brand than Georgia Southern. I would argue much bigger. The win over #5 Michigan vaulted them way past Georgia Southern. Everyone still remembers that as the biggest upset in college football history.

That win lead to the discussion of their three national championships in a row (might have been two at the time). Lots of people followed them to see if they could win another one. That conversation never happened when Georgia Southern beat Florida. People remember, but it just wasn't that big of a deal.

They were what North Dakota State is now. No one ever thought of Georgia Southern in that manner. Georgia Southern won two in a row in 1999 and 2000, but it was at a time when less people cared about 1-AA football, and there was no signature win to make people say "wow".

Most people don't know Adrian Peterson played for Georgia Southern, just like most people don't know DeMarcus Ware and Osi Umenyiora played for Troy. "No way he played for Georgia Southern, look it up" is the response I get when I tell people where Peterson played.

Running the conference table means absolutely nothing to the average fan. They don't even know who's in the Sun Belt, so why would they care. Their knowledge of the Sun Belt is about 1/10th of most of our knowledge of the MAC.

Georgia Southern hasn't gotten anymore press than Louisiana or Arkansas State or Troy has during their title runs and bowl seasons. We see press clippings and we think everyone reads them, all the time. That's just not the case.

To be fair, the Adrian Peterson they probably assume you're talking about definitely did not go to Georgia Southern.

at this point we are nickel and diming it. App's and GS's natoinal brand is as large as what we have done in the past season. Southern has gotten way more publicity than App over the past year.
I even had a guy in my office say yesterday "man, I bet app state sure is glad you guys left for fbs". This is a guy that lives in Charlotte.

It's all a matter of perspective, but one definitely doesn't have a big advantage over the other in this category.

lol. exactly. that has nothing to do with Southern's national brand. That has to do with one adrian peterson having a much better NFL career than the other.

Neither one of us has room to talk about being a "national brand." We are at best 'Niche Brands," meaning people who have a particular taste in football (FCS) or remember what happened to Michigan 10 years ago know who you/we are.

One of us MIGHT have room to brag once,

"LOL. You lost to GS/App!"

turns into

"I'm not surprised you lost to GS/App."

until then to the general public we are ALL lumped together as the little try hards that occasionally catch a team sleeping. If you're cool with that being the definition of your "national brand" then I stand corrected.

My own silliness only proves my point, haha. I spend time around fans of these leagues and even I assumed it was the same guy. How much does anyone think the average popcorn eater knows about Sun Belt and FCS teams?

Not much I bet, but Appalachian's signature win and national championships really was different at the time. It changed the landscape of college football. More and more FCS (1-AA) teams started beating the bigger guys. The world took notice. The Florida win was just not the same and Georgia Southern has no recent FCS national championships to help bolster the Florida win.

Winning the SBC and getting a ton of press clippings is not as big a deal as most think. ULM took Baylor, Auburn, and one other big time team down to the wire a few years ago, beating #8 Arkansas and no one outside of here remembers. Kind of like what Georgia Southern did last year. I don't even remember the details of who ULM played exactly (or even all of Georgia Southern's OOC teams last year, and I'm a Sun Belt fan), but it was a big deal for a few weeks. They played well in SBC play that year too I remember. 43-42 over WKU was a great game if I remember the score correctly.

exactly!

having a national brand for either of us means walking the streets of California wearing a shirt with our athletic logo, and a majority of people knowing what team it represents.

neither one of us have that.
