Times have changed how? Other than the helicopter parent trend, which seems to finally be subsiding (at least around here), nothing has changed.

Crime is much higher and a lot more nutty people running free than in the 60s and 70s. TV isn't real life, but just watch a 60s TV show and compare it to now. It gives you an idea. It also shows what the nuts have been exposed to.

Exact same situation as me. I can't imagine my parents not letting me out of their site. I spent most days deep in the woods or at homemade bmx tracks we made about a mile from home.

I was out every day from sun up to sun down. I refuse however to let my kids roam without me knowing where they are at all times. If something ever happened to them, I'd never forgive myself.

You aren't doing them any favors with that mindset. The way you phrased that makes it sound like it's more about how you feel than what's good for their development. Kids need some space. They need to know you trust them too.

Grew up on a farm so slightly different situation. Did get into trouble for taking my friends boat 20 miles or so to Beaufort when in was 11, he was 14. We were supposed to be fishing and stay within a few miles of home and this was well before cellphones, around 1990.

Were you around in the 60s and 70s?

It doesn't take much googling to try to prove your point. And you can't because you are totally clueless. Violent rate in 1960-160.9 per 100,000. Since then it climbed as high as 758, nearly 5 times the 1960 rate, when it peaked in the 90s. 2013 was 367.9.

Crime reporting has also chnaged. May not be an apples to apples comparison.

Lol. wow. Stuff we did...

As an early 20 something I took my older brother out for a sail on my Prindle 16 Cat on the Chesapeake Bay, going to meet his wife, friends and in-laws on their 36 ft daysailer. Gonna tie up, have dinner, drinks, sunset, helluva day.

Said he had it all covered.

Course the Chesapeake is a BIG body of water...

And every boat out there is a red hulled, white sailed daysailer. Not a good combination. And he's a dumb*** when it comes to that kind of thing.

We had no lights, no food, couple waters and vests, that was it. Shipping lanes going in and out of Norfolk, and after listening to his "strategery" to get us back to port, we ended up some 12 miles north. In no wind. With no engine. No paddles.

After telling him to STFU, I got us back around 2 A.M., shivering cold after dodging 30-40 story container ships and wakes for 9 hours.

Shook it off, got on the road and fueled up at a 24 hour dive on the ride home in my topless CJ in 60 degree temps. The Glenfiddich helped.

Got home, no one had made a single call. Wife and my GF at the time sound asleep...

He and his wife divorced about 6 months later. Haha. I think she'd rather he had drowned. 03-lmfao

So am I. You think my kids aren't living a life as long as I know where they are at all times?

Please explain.

My parents let me "roam" and by the time I was 13, I had done drugs, had sex, drank beer, etc. etc.

My kids are approaching 40 now (And that's hysterical in and of itself!) and I have no idea where either of them are right now. But when they were young, at least one parent was to know where they were at all times. And woe be unto them should they not be where they said they would be. As a libertarian this was one they few rules under which they had to live.

I was lucky. There were like 20 kids in the area. My parents only had one rule: Let somebody know that you're leaving the house. After that it was basketball, hockey, playing army, and at least one play fight that turned into a real fight. From after school until dark.

See?

No explanation needed. You just did.

Without some freedom as kids, they grow up into little robots that spend their lives constantly paranoid about danger lurking in every corner.

I will say, 13 is a bit young for backseat romance. You don't even have a backseat.

I guess I'm not saying that you shouldn't know WHERE your kids are, you should just let them be out of your "line of sight" every once in a while to let them feel responsibility.

RE: Free Range Kids
I grew up in a true neighborhood. There were 10 boys within a couple of years age of me that were like(and still are) brothers to me. The parents all knew each other and socialized together. I had 7 or 8 moms and dads. We all obeyed each others parents and no one ever got into any trouble. It was a special place to live. We were outside all day doing something until dark. When we got older...we partied at whatever parents house was vacant over the weekend. I remember my mom saying one time...."You must have had a big party here this weekend."....."The house is very clean."

On a side note....Out of the dozen or so families in that neighborhood that had kids my age and grew up to raise their own family...only one has ended up in a divorce..and that was after the kids were grown. Pretty interesting given the national trend.

I see the piece was written by the famous woman in NYC who got in trouble for letting her kids ride the subway.

When I was 13 and 14, my friends and I rode the subway all the time, mostly from Grand Central Station to Shea Stadium to see the NY Mets. That was in 1975-76; things were different then.
