United States wins Math Olympiad for 1st time in 21 years
Quote:...Team America has finally retaken the International Mathematical Olympiad crown. The victory this week was a historic comeback.

...“It’s been 21 years,” Team USA’s head coach, Po-Shen Loh, told The Washington Post...

"...This is a matter of national pride.” he explained. “One reason we are super excited is that for the past five years or so, we’ve been consistently second or third. It’s actually quite difficult to win. We are going up against a natural population disadvantage in the sense that China, which is the usual winner, has four times as many people.”

“Finally, to topple a country that should beat us by all expectations is a fantastic achievement for these six students,” said Loh, a math professor at Carnegie Mellon University.

edit - Here's the top 10:

1. USA
2. China
3. South Korea
4. North Korea
5. Vietnam
6. Australia
7. Iran
8. Russia
9. Canada
10. Singapore

Good news. What are the odds that any of the kids on the team are more than 2nd generation Americans?

what about mexico?....certainly you aren't shocked that they didn't make the grade...for obvious reasons, they probably didn't even send a team.....

thank you....I stand corrected regarding my previous assumption....19th is surprising until one factors in the NAFTA effect being realized (easily another assumption based on their educational system remaining static but more money, more intelligence being shipped in to manage business)....the last five years relative to the previous 25 is noticeably different ....I wonder how many of the indigenous were on this team?

our team's cultural makeup makes perfect sense when viewing from the 'melting pot'....and not a mexican in the bunch

also interesting is the US only achieved double digits once......all other years are top ten....

I just don't understand why I think like I do 03-wink

edit: what the hell happened to bulgaria.....did they take up cliff diving without a chute?

also, this competition is only reflective of the best of the best....it has almost zero value when viewing the cultural composite....money in the pocket allowing the advantage to achieve success being the exception

If Obama had a son he wouldn't look like any of them? Isn't that the way he thinks?

It isn't shocking that the people on this board can take a very positive event and find every way possible to belittle it.

No. I am not surprised. The wealthy run Mexico(drug cartels included) and it is their economic philosophy to keep and maintain wealth at the top and keep the average population illiterate or near illiterate because it creates a permanent underclass and cheap labor. Pretty much what many on here on the right are pushing for to be implemented here whether they know it or not.

wow....can I coin this as a 'bob' epiphany...so wealth means nothing anywhere else relative to politics and only wealthy mexicans want to keep the little man little....that's the only place that happens....got it....

or....are you saying that all weathy people are hoarders that printed their own money so they could belittle the poor

or....they don't give a shite and sip margaritas by the sea and communicate via cell phone to make sure their money is still in the safe....

or.....money is evil if someone has more than someone else

I'm sure there are other possibilities....feel free to add

even korean sisters in the same evening....

yeah, and some black ones too....

you have zero clue how shite works.....I'm not ashamed to share what I've experienced....and really don't give a shite how small your earning potential is moving forward.....that's your skin you sleep in....

Jeez Robert , What part of Closing the Border don't You understand. We don't want an undereducated, dependent underclass coming here either. We have enough of Our Own disadvantaged and disabled American people to take care of. Seems only the DNC wants open borders for future dependent voters.
