RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den
FWIW, I hear we're far more involved with Green than Washington at this point.

What about the kid we had the home visit with a couple of months ago? I could throw a bunch of letters together to form a last name but I'd be grasping at straws. Why'd he give us a home if he wasn't at least somewhat interested in what we had to say?

My point is that you and maybe several others here may know way more than most people about this stuff. But there's a lot I bet that's unknown, too

I don't know much, certainly not the most.

I like everyone that we've offered.

ODU most certainly CAN provide that same level of comfort if that is what a guy like Coleman is seeking. Those things have happened at Wichita State, Butler, and to some extent at VCU over the past few years. No reason that ODU can't be there too. If noting else, ODU's program has shown over the past couple of years along with it's recent recruiting that it is on a quick track going upward. It is like the comment in the movie Field Of Dreams ... If you build it they will come. ODU appears to be building it by it's recent recruiting success and wins on the basketball court. That will (hopefully) continue by its upcoming recruiting classes. If it all comes together as we hope then ODU will not only get back into the Top 25 again this season or next, but be a regular member of it. ESPN, sell out crowds, etc. will all be there too (at ODU).

You've got to walk before you run. WSU, Butler, and VCU did not start recruiting those types of players and then start making tournament runs. You have to make the runs first. Let's keep getting the Trey's of the world and make a couple of deep runs with the Stith's, then we can hope to sign a 4 or 5 star.

Conference affiliation also hurts. If he wants to stay home so his family can see more games, they'd probably get to see more if he went to UNC or UVA whereas, among those two, Pitt, VT, NC State, Duke, and Wake Forest are all reasonably close for an inexpensive trip. In CUSA it is just Charlotte. We have hometown hero going for us, but as I said, it would have to be a sentimental pick and is out of our hands.

That's some interesting mental gymnastics.

50% of his games (home) at ODU will be within walking distance for his family.

At UNC 50% of his games (home) will be 4 hours away. But hey... there are a few random road games every year that are within 6 hours too!

You gotta believe every mid-major is selling the Steph Curry story as a good example of why one should commit over a P5. Maybe Matt will buy that pitch after playing at Oak Hill.

To me that can be simply making the Tournament and winning at least a game or two in each year.

GMU also went to the Final Four and was on top of the world, but was not able to sustain that with wins over the next 2-3 seasons. A team like Gonzaga on the other hand had some (less) success in the NCAA Tournament, but mainly they had year after year of Top 25 appearances along with wins on the court and NCAA appearances to get them the sustained national recognition that they have achieved.

Final 4 run isn't necessary (even Gonzaga doesn't have that), but we have to get to the second week, IMO, to build that kind of sustainable recruiting success. But yes, unlike George Mason, we also have to capitalize on it as well.

Thanks. Not having to make a Final Four run was the point I was making by pointing out that Gonzaga had achieved big success in spite of not having that while GMU didn't achieve lasting success event though they did. The key is getting to the NCAA's consistently and winning at least a game or two each time for several years running IMO. I feel like Jeff is gathering enough talent to put ODU in position to achieve that goal.

Is that etched in stone somewhere and I missed it? If so then please don't share that with the coaching staff. ODU has already signed (or gotten commitments from) a couple of 4 star rated players out of high school since the season ended that will be available in the 2016-17 season. They are B.J. Stith (transfer from UVA) and Coleburn (transfer from Illinois). Additionally Porter (transfer from GMU was the Gatorade player of the year in VA his senior year of HS) and was starting at GMU during the last half of the season. I'm not ready for the team to go back to the walking stage.

I'm guessing that you are correct about those other teams not getting those kinds of players before making their Tournament runs. Just saying it doesn't have to be that way as the facts have shown by ODU's recent recruiting success. Coleman would mesh well at ODU with those other guys and help to create one heck of team. Even if he elects to go somewhere else I have a feeling that ODU is going to be a tough out for most anyone they face during that time period as long as Jeff comes back healthy and the rest of the staff remains in place for another couple years or so.

What is taking so long for us to find a JUCO guy to commit to us? School is right around the corner. Does anyone know a day that would likely be considered the cut off date? I don't know if there is one in place but we should be hearing something soon about Haynes or Kah or whoever for the upcoming season.

He's possibly a one and done type prospect.

I'd love for us to get out hands on one of those. I bet our coaches would, too.

I would rather have a kid who is going to play for 2, 3 or even 4 years ove a one and done.

The guy is a 5-star recruit by ESPN, ranked 8th in the country at his position. You figure out a way for someone like that to stay 2-3-4 years at ODU -- or anywhere -- and you let us know. You get a guy like that and even if he stays one year, other similar recruits may well start to look at you differently.

Unless the guy is the next coming of LeBron or Michael Jordan, I don't want a one and done. Why go through the effort of recruiting a kid only to have to replace him the very next year. Seems like a waste of time and effort. Just my uneducated opinion.

Haynes and or Kah would be not for this coming season but year after I think. DaBig could set us straight I'm sure.

You should ask Calipari that...

My guess would be you can compete and win National Championships for starters...

if he's one of the best players in the country and wants to play for ODU, then I take him for how ever long he wants to stay.

The idiom "let's worry about crossing that bridge when we come to it" seems to fit well here. If we manage to sign him, and he leaves to go pro after one season; I'm sure we would be able to recruit a replacement given the added exposure he would undoubtedly bring the program.

We have recruited Kah for three years for just two years of play. The lastest on his timeline is to join us next summer.

Think we're done, unless something falls into our lap.
