A little sanity at an NC public school
http://christiannews.net/2015/06/18/teac...al-outrcy/
Quote:According to reports, Currie decided to read the book to his class after a student chided a male classmate during gym class and told him that he was acting like a girl. Currie, a homosexual himself, said that because “the word gay was used in a derogatory way,” he believed that students should be taught a lesson.
“In that moment, it just seemed natural to me to read the book and have a conversation about treating people with respect,” he told reporters on Tuesday. “My focus then was on the child, and helping the child.”
at that last line.
Quote:Therefore, Currie obtained a copy of the book “King & King” from Goodhand, a story about a single prince who is encouraged by his mother to marry, but passes up all the princesses as potential mates to instead “marry” the brother of a princess.
However, after some parents learned that Currie, 25, had read the book to their children, they contacted the school. Within hours, Currie received a call from the principal, requesting a meeting the following morning.
Three parents soon filed written complaints over the matter, which resulted in public meetings regarding concerns about the book being read to children. One meeting was reportedly attended by 200 people.
Quote:A school review committee, which investigated the matter, upheld the use of the book twice. But the principal issued a new policy to teachers, requiring them to provide parents with an advance list of books to be children that year.
Currie says that he finds the requirement to be “unrealistic,” because “great teachers pull text because it’s right for the moment.”
“I think that that’s very dangerous for a school system to get behind and support,” he said.
However, Currie says that he ultimately resigned because he does not feel like he has the support of administrators.
Glad the principle issued a sensible policy on this. I'm really not sure what's hard to understand from the gay perspective.

I would find his reading it extremely offensive as these are 3rd graders. He's got no business pushing this on 3rd graders who haven't gone through puberty and forcing their parents to talk about these issues before the kids are ready. I find the book very inappropriate for that age group. He shouldn't have the support of adminstrators with such bad judgement.

Nothing wrong with advanced notice with books or movies for that matter. At my former campus, all movie and book requests had to be submitted in writing and approved by the principal before it ever reached the kids.

And I'm sure Mr Currie will enjoy whatever high-dollar private school he ends up teaching at.

It'll be an all-boys school with on campus housing for teachers for sure.

He has no place in the public school system.
That said, I bet he moves into administration.

Taxpayers have a right to know what their children are being taught.

Correct, they are our children, not the government's.

Funny how libs are against one kind of ideology being taught (Christianity) but are all for a different kind (Homosexual activism/Liberalism) being taught...
It's laughable how hypocritical these compassionate progressives are.

No, its the nanny staters trying to push their philosophy on our children when they are still young enough to have a nanny.
And its our job to raise our children.

RE: A little sanity at an NC public school
Oh I get it, I have a daughter. People are sensitive about their kids and public schools are ripe for public policy fights and PC bull****. This is just more of it. Conservatives get pissy because the sign on the kids door says Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. Liberals get their panties in a wad if a picture book doesn't have any black kids in it. You guys sit here and harp on your differences so much you fail to see how alike you are. And to me you're both being little ******* that are drawing attention and resources away from more important things.
So a guy reads a story that has two guys get married. So what? It happens, get used to it. It's not 50 Shades of Gray. It's no more sexual than a story with a Prince and Princess. If he's teaching that being gay is the best thing since sliced bread then yeah that's not good but if he's just demonstrating that gay people exist and they may be different from you but you should still treat them with respect then I don't see anything wrong with that. Same goes for people of different religions, you may think and teach your kids that both Hindus and gays are going to hell but I hope you at least teach them to treat them as you'd like to be treated and if you're not then I have no problem with the schools doing it for you.
But you guys go ahead and scrub and sterilize society to the point nobody can say anything, it's fine.

If you want to teach your 3rd grader that gay people exist, by all means do so, but it is not educational and needs to stay out of the schools. The only "moral" lesson the schools need to teach is to follow the rules, which do not permit treating people poorly, whether they are gay, black, red, yellow, poor, short, or fat.

RE: A little sanity at an NC public school
It isn't the place of some twit to take it upon himself to educate kids on anything outside his assigned subject matter.
If a math teacher wants to whip out an extra book and teach his kids how great calculus will be or how important it is I'm fine with that.
However, there is no need to whip out a book and try and 'teach' children about things completely outside their purview.
