Fred Dean was known as "the natural" by NFL coaches. He was one of the strongest players in the NFL and he never worked out with weights. Fast and quick on his feet, Fred was one of the best athletes ever, from any state. Any list for Louisiana must have Fred Dean at the top of it.

In YOUR opinion, who are the 5 greatest athletes born/raised in your school's state? This can be athletic accomplishments combined with athletic ability, or however YOU choose to define it. For the purposes of this thread, it does not count if they moved to your state for college or professional sports, etc. Only natives of the state - we will count moving there very young and being raised there for their younger years.

For NC, my list is the following (in no order):

David Thompson
Michael Jordan
Richard Petty
Ray Floyd
Gaylord Perry

I haven't come up with one for VA, yet.

For NC you could consider Jim "Catfish" Hunter, Roman Gabriel, and Julius Peppers
Sylvester Ritter better than all of those guys.

I know we Tech fans sound like real homers on this thread but Malone, Bradshaw and Dean are probably better than any 3 Louisiana born players than even LSU can come up with.

For Alabama, I'm surprised you guys are listing Bo Jackson in a second tier. It didn't ask for the most accomplished.

I'm not sure there was a greater athlete of his time and perhaps of all time than Bo Jackson.

4. Memphis and NBA Star: Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway

6. David Price- Pitcher Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays, Vandy Murfreesboro Native
7. Don Griffin- NBA Def. Rookie of the Year, two time Super Bowl Champ 49ers, MTSU All-American Murfreesboro Native
8. Sonny Gray-Pitcher Oakland A's, Vandy Smyrna Native
9. Clyde Lee- NBA 12 year career and SEC Player of the Year at VU
Nashville Native
10. Shawn Marion-NBA Journeyman, UNLV and Phoenix Suns
Clarksville Native

I believe you intended to say NFL for Griffin.

Others I think you could have probably include in front of these others ... again because the original post asked for greatest athlete not most accomplished.

The one you left off is the only man from MT to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated - once considered the greatest athlete in the world in his time.

Brian Oldfield from Warren County, TN
http://www.murfreesboropost.com/vinson-w...-cms-36823

Others you could have included were...
Reggie White - once held the sack record
Todd Helton - rare two sport star in college

And then there was some others.
Koko B. Ware. I mean dude was just a freak.
Jerry The King Lawler

And probably around fourth or fifth on your list should have been...
ThreeifbyLightning

Just sayin
