Congress Going After the NCAA?
Maybe...hopefully. Syracuse and others have some friends in Congress.

Political grandstanding is correct. Nothing more nothing less. New bill introduced died every day which is the same thing that will happen with this bill.

I'd actually be all for this if they granted the investigating authority subpoena power. Then you could get to the bottom of investigations relatively quickly and impose reasonable penalties based on fact in a reasonable time frame. A set of hard and fast penalties for certain violation levels would be nice as well. Takes the emotion out of things. If your program is found guilty of doing "X", then your punishment is "Y". No more making ti up as we go punishments.

RE: Congress Going After the NCAA?
The Senate can create an overseer body of neutral of Government involvement and neutral from any schools that are in power 5. As it is, the tax payers need a say on this. What we pay in taxes are funding these schools for research, education and all that. The NCAA have really became powerless against the power 5 schools. Most of these schools are government run. It could be the start of the end of the Power 5 conferences because these are older schools that are outdated. We could see new schools from the G5 in the P5 conferences by geography. Could wind up getting P5 schools in G5 conferences, new FBS schools, new D2 in FCS and so forth. I could see that West Virginia would get booted and New Mexico, Colorado State, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota State and South Dakota State with a Missouri State in the Big 12. We could see Boise State, UNR, Hawaii, Utah State, Fresno State and San Diego State in the PAC 12. We could see MAC schools be placed into the Big 10. AAC, Sun Belt and C-USA into Big 10, Big 12, ACC and SEC. We could see that conferences could be do away in favor of Regional flavor. Northwest, southwest, south plains, north plains, midwest, southeast, mid-Atlantic and northeast regions. Do like D2 do for schools. Rank teams by Region.

There are a lot of questions and issues related to realignment that Congress should look at. Given the money generated by the Power 5 conferences and its impact on universities, Congress may want to review these concerns.

Congress needs to STF up about sports. 03-banghead

When they make the country work efficiently, they can start thinking about other interests. But if they fix sports like they've fixed the economy, we're all screwed.

When the top 1 % control 42% of the nation's wealth and the gap grows wider every year, perhaps it IS time to look into the matter. The stock market crash of 1929 wasn't the only cause of the Great Depression. A second, and equally important, cause was the wide gap between rich and poor - too much of the population was unable to "consume" products. And yes, the ever-widening gap between the P-5 cartel and the rest of FBS is similar in some ways. The "let them eat cake" mentality sometimes backfires.

I can see the non-profit status taken away...schools are basically creating a profit making enterprise.

Ordinarily I agree with you...but anything to knock the NCAA back a bit I'm all for.

The NFL won't let the NCAA lose tax exempt status.

And the crack pipe dream that congress will redraw conferences so the G5 can be included with their local P5 teams is just that.

I'd say that a lot of FCS programs moving up to FBS has a good bit to do with the widening gap you're speaking of. Some of the newer programs to FBS, as well as some programs that should have dropped from FBS long ago, are dragging the averages down for all other G5 schools.
