You can read something into nearly every sentence of this self-serving "gift" ..... and what it doesn't address.

This can't be real: it praises Ray for future contributions, and we all know you can't plant a cherry tree based on promises. Ray would never accept praise for a pledge, that would be hypocritical and Ray is a man of honor.

Hey, as much as I have mostly ill will feelings toward Dr Watts, the gifts of scholarships for Engineering, Medicine and Nursing, and those cherry trees should be appreciated by the UAB family. Of course, if the decision about reinstatement goes against us, it wouldnt surprise me if some sort of 'Updyke nonsense" might befall some of those saplings.

OK, this is ridiculous. Let's be better than this. I like the idea of the cherry trees. NOW BRING BACK FOOTBALL!

I like the idea of them too. However, I also know how visceral the feelings of despair and anger will be for many UAB supporters if he doesn't restore our programs.

Now, Ray, "COUGH UP THE ELEVEN MILLION DOLLARS" that UAB lost from dismantling and re-instating football.

Maybe we can burn the Watts Cherry Trees for a bonfire on the eve of our first homecoming game when football is back!

Man, never would have thought before I'd be suspicious of a contribution to UAB from the president of all people. It could just be an atypical act of good will, it could be pandering, it could be an lacking attempt to pacify, it could be a pretty passive show of force, etc.

The only people cool with a lasting tribute to Dr. Watts probably couldn't fill a SUV. Still, those scholarships will help some people and those trees getting updyke'd in any way would be a shame because we're better than that.

It could be the final act of an outgoing president ...

After reading this the Watzies will assign 24 hour police protection to the trees.

The trees will probably be behind iron bars and electrified razor wire.

Hope so but doubt it. The trees will likely be his only positive legacy. For most people it would suck to be remembered as the president who destroyed a university but planted some trees. However, I don't think Watts cares what anyone thinks other than a select few BoT members.

Nope. He knows that they will take real good care of him as long as he does what he was hired to do.

Black toilet paper and foam footballs I think is a fitting way to treat the trees. It can become a tradition ;-)

Why not just leave trees along. A negative precedent related to trees and football has been set. Don't fall for the trap.

I'm not going to do anything to the trees, save for maybe sneer at them.
