C-USA All Sports for 2014/2015
After reading the Bubas Cup threads on the SBC Board, I wondered what the results might be if C-USA did something similar in determining an overall sports Champion based on how a team finished in the regular season, . (Post Season Championships are NOT included unless this was the only way to determine a ranking -- example Track and Field/Swimming & Diving. In Basketball, Baseball and Softball, post season tournaments are not included.)

So, having far too much time on my hands awaiting football, I did a simple spread sheet of all C-USA Sports, using a system similar to the SBC. Using football as an example, 13 teams participated in football. So 13 points were awarded to the team with the best record, 12 to the second team, etc. When all sports were accounted for these were then totaled across all sports to get the TOTAL PERFORMANCE SCORES shown below. Performance shown on the C-USA site is where records came from.

Using this formula, Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky share in the top all sports performance for the Academic Year 2014-2015.

Middle Tennessee 127
Western Kentucky 127
Rice 110
UTEP 108
UTSA 104
North Texas 98
Charlotte 91
Marshall 84
Old Dominion 83
UAB 77
LaTech 75
Southern Miss 74
FAU 70
FIU 61

There is probably a very good reason why we don't do this kind of thing, and I'm sure you'll tell me why. But, hopefully, this meager attempt to rank all sports performance will generate some lively discussion anyway on the relative performance of each member school.

This conference really needs the Florida schools to not be pulling up the rear spots in a list like this. We need FAU and FIU to be more like UCF and USF in all the sportsl.

This is pretty much the way it's always been no matter what league we were in. MT and Western have the most complete athletic departments.

When I say we're consistently competing for championships in every sport this is one way to provide some evidence to that.

Personally, I don't really give a crap about it, and I'm glad C-USA doesn't do it. I have evolved and wish we would put more attention and resources into our revenue producing sports. That's where you build brand.

One problem I can see. ODU competes at a very high level in field hockey, womens lacross and wrestling, but C-USA does not offer these sports. We have to join numerous other leagues as associates, thus our success is not being accounted for. This is probably true for some schools as well.

Even if you were awarded points for those sports, you would have finished sixth with 103 points.

C-USA All Sports for 2014/2015
WKU has always been this way. Also, saw a fun-fact on Twitter the other day:

This is WKU's first year in C-USA, and we were the first school in C-USA history to win at least 8 championships and win a bowl game. Looks like adding WKU was a solid choice for the conference!

....now we just need to win the football championship next year....

I think CUSA should consider awarding an All-Sports Trophy to the Best Overall Athletic Program in the league annually. I really don't know which other leagues other than SBC does it but I do know Middle was dominant winning the Bubas Cup 7 or 8 times out of the 12 or so years we were there. Our evil archrival Western has also been up there yearly. What is the downside?

The Sun Belt does it, we should to! Thanks Middle and Western for bringing that over to CUSA

Yep, the other sports are good for the kids, their parents, scholarship money but that's about it. Honestly, I would trade last place in every other sport for first place in football and basketball. Sure, a competitive baseball team would be nice but as long as the football and basketball teams are winning, the vast majority of alumni are happy and more revenue is generated.

Actually, using the point scale from the Sun Belt, WKU would win it outright.

Not sure where your math is but I was actually charting it myself and had WKU with something like 138 points, a few points above Rice.

Maybe you did it based on Tournament Results? SBC only used Regular Season results unless it was a sport like golf, tennis, etc., that only had a year-ending tournament.

The problem with these "All Sports Trophies" are that they are heavily weighted to benefit athletic programs that excel at badminton, checkers, chess, tennis, golf, Lacrosse, Field Hockey, Canasta, and other such nonsense. 03-lmfao

Seriously, these "bubba polls" are only worthwhile if the sports are WEIGHTED properly. In college athletics, Football and men's basketball scores should represent over 70% of any final score in a poll like this simply because those two sports typically generate the overwhelming amount of revenues and publicity the schools receive for their respective athletic programs.

So, weight the sport and give FB and BB a higher share of the points than you do spring sports. Doesn't diminish the fact that it would give the Conference another "Focus Event" for our almost invisible commissioner. And some Pub for the winning university whoever wins it on an annual basis.

It's called a ALL SPORTS award for a reason and in that reason it doesn't say most popular. And in a sense it is weighted. You would get a point for each conference school playing that sport and while I don't know the makeup in numbers for all CUSA sports...

we know everyone plays football and basketball so those sports would get you the maximum amount of points. Where if say softball only had 7 members the max you can get is 7 points.

What a all sports awards really shows is who is most stable and support all their programs. That's not always the case but over the years if you looked at muts and Western budgets you could see both schools show they are usually more stable....money/budget wise than other schools in the conference.

But again it's called a all sports award for a reason

The only programs that wouldn't want it are the ones that are only good in one or two sports (LA Tech, for example).

Sadly, Southern Miss has been terrible in everything lately it seems like except...volleyball and women's hoops, I guess?

Kudos WKU and MTSU and Rice for carrying the banner. Hopefully Wild Bill will get us turn around sometime this decade.

We rant about the P5 and ESPN ruining college sports with money yet dismiss our own "non revenue" sports.

Ha. Ha. Well said FIU. However, we all signed up for this. It's eat or be eaten. We knew that going in.

If we wanted something different we should just go the UNO route.

WKU women's programs have been unbelievable this season, has to be one of WKU's best ever in our history, not sure our woemns programs can duplicate the season they had minus our volleyball program....

Our mens teams could learn from our girls...All in all though WKU certainly made a huge splash first season in CUSA....Of course I expect this to continue....

Yet this off season is all about Marshall and their NFL powerhouse program that is somehow stuck in college football mode..
