Another factor that I recall from years ago is that the pay gap between men and men doing the same job was somewhere in the 15-25% range, with the advantage going to men who were the head of a family over men who were not (i.e. the market included a bias towards men who had kids and families - either through negotiating power or biases of employers).
If women were really earning less than men for the same jobs, then it seems like a good hiring strategy would be to hire a lot of women at lower cost and thereby gain a competitive advantage in that industry. Are there examples of this happening?

I don't think anyone disputes that on average, women earn less than men.

With the same criteria (education, years with the company, job duties, performance) women make the same as men.
But if you compare a man with more education and experience to a woman with less education and experience, of course their pay will be unequal.
If we had two air traffic controllers, and the man had 25 years experience and the woman had 5, would you expect them to be making the same money even though they're doing the exact same job? Probably not.
