Should NIU find a better conference?
These topics seem trendy so I thought I'd hop on the bandwagon.

AAC? Our football helps your credibility but boy is our basketball stinky

MWC? We come in and instantly compete but there needs to be room and expansion and I see this as a long shot

B12? Dat TV market yo... that's about it. And I guess we compete with the P5 schools in football and win regularly already so we wouldn't join and immediately be a bottom dweller here

Thoughts?

Id say stay as far away as you can from the MWC/AAC, those are lateral traps with no improvement in your ability to upward mobility, just a lot more travel costs. All in philosophy for the Big 12 though, that's where Frazier seems to be pointed in the grand plan which is good.

I already said this was not supposed to be posted here... it was posted in the realignment board and was moved here (not sure why, but whatever)

RE: Should NIU find a better conference?
the answer is easy...if NIU can get a 'better conference' then yes, why not if it makes sense financially. the real question is 'should a better conference take NIU'. of that i have never heard a compelling argument why another conference would want NIU.

You really couldn't have a cleaner fit into a puzzle missing a piece than NIU would be to the Big 12. The amount of television sets reached with the Chicago market would be an advertising cash cow for the conference too.

RE: Should NIU find a better conference?
Stay Cool, a belated welcome to the board and thanks for your contributions. Keep it up, it's nice to have some new blood here. FYI the reason you haven't gotten much response to your question, which is a good one, is because us oldtimers have beaten the **** out of that topic over the past several years. It comes up every year at this time because there isn't much else to talk about. If I weren't so lazy I would dig up some of those old threads and let you enjoy our erudite musings on the subject. After untold pages of posts we reached no consensus whatsoever which means we should probably be in Congress. Anyway, please keep up the contributions.

if the chicago market was the 'magical key' to it all, then it would have been tapped at this point. answer me that...why isn't the chicago market already tapped by one of the big boys not called the big 10?

What does this even mean? Why hasn't another conference made an effort to add a FBS football school in the Chicago area?

NIU is in one of the less regarded conferences, averages what 15-18k fans a game, and NIU is in the Big 12 discussion. I think that speaks more to the power of the Chicago market than anything else. The attendance issues would easily take care of themselves if NIU entered the Big 12. You could pretty much name the amount of seats you wanted to add to Huskie Stadium and you would sell the place out. Heck Texas or Oklahoma fans would probably bring 10k a game by themselves.

NIU isn't in the Big 12 discussion. Not even close, unfortunately. The Big 12 powers would decide to break up the conference before NIU even crosses their mind.

You know something Frazier doesn't then, because that is very clearly the goal of the athletics department right now. Id love to agree with you, but the mass Chicago media market is just the huge elephant in the room.

Why wouldn't it be his goal? That says nothing about where NIU sits in the Big 12's eyes (as in not in the picture).
And let's not forget, master plans are cheap to broadcast. To start one is in Frazier's best interest. Where it leads to, well, most of the people in charge will be long gone, as will open spots in the P5.

I don't mean any disrespect but I think Frazier has a better pulse on things than we do.
