This season
IMO, what has happened this year is going into this year there were questions just how good we were, especially vs the A10 and AAC. We answered those questions very well(I think if we hadn't, the expansion talk would be loud as anything right now).
But now, the question has changed to how good we are compared to the other power conferences.
right now s16 teams-
ACC 4- Louisville yet to play
B12- 0- Kansas, Oklahoma, WVU yet to play
B10 1- Wisconsin, Maryland, Iowa yet to play
P12 3- Oregon yet to play
SEC 1- but that's Kentucky
The answer there after yesterday isn't quite as good.
So the question has changed after this season, and the answer to the new question isn't as good as we want it to be. It's still been a good season. We are now unquestionably the top non P5 conference- something we couldn't say this time last year. So it's been a good year. Just not a great year.

RE: This season
Also- if you say it's not fair to just take this year. Add last year-
ACC 1 more so 5 total with Louisville left to play
B12 2 more so 3 total with WVU left to play
B10- 3 more so 4 total with Wisconsin, Maryland, Iowa yet to play
P12- 3 more so 6 total with Oregon left to play
SEC- 3 more so 4 total

RE: This season
No question, our R32 flop is a BAD thing. Might cause the selection committee and power conferences to start regarding us as mid-major, like the AAC and MWC, rather than as a "major", the way they have up to this point.
Saturday was the worst day in Big East basketball history, no doubt about it. We can only hope real damage hasn't been done to our rep going forward.

hyperbole much? While Saturday no doubt wasn't great, to call it the worst day in Big East basketball history is a joke. I think like I saw on another board, the fact that some folks that are our normal detractors aren't saying much is a positive.

I think the weekend where the BE got 11 in and only 2 out (and the 2 were MU and UConn, which were among the lowest BE seeds) was more embarrassing. I think the tournament where only 6 of 16 BE teams was more embarrassing. It could have been better, but it didn't work out. The trajectory is very positive.

Fair point. That was really bad.

RE: This season
The Big East is 5-5 in the NCAA tournament so far, not 0-10. Villanova's loss was a disappointment. Too bad Butler couldn't squeeze by Notre Dame in overtime.
After Georgetown's disaster of a season last year, this year was an improvement. But they had a losing record versus the Big East teams that made the tournament this year (vs 8-0 against the bottom 4 teams). The round of 32 was probably their ceiling this year. Hopefully they can go a round deeper next year with another good class coming in.

True about being 5-5- just after going 4-0 first day, 5-5 feels like a let down :)
I think mentally for Georgetown, not losing to a double digit seed is huge this year. I think next year could be an adjustment year for us quite frankly- we are losing quite a bit.

Since making the Final 4 eight long years ago, our tournament performance has been abysmal. Really, historically abysmal.
Sadly, the Utah loss didn't feel like an upset at all. IMO we were over-seeded at a 4, we really were about a 6, and if you are a 6, you should lose between R32 and R16, which is what we did. We need to get better, starting with recruiting.

I thought that Butler had a very good team this year. Jones is one hell of a player.

I agree Terry. One other comment on the season. I always thought the 16 team BE season was a grind but as a fan I liked that. I think this version of the BE is moving in that direction over the last two years. Maybe fewer top 10 teams for now, but plenty of games against top 25 caliber teams, plenty of games that are 1 or 2 possessions down to the last minute, diversity of style, always physical and with schools where basketball is the focus (even if it doesn't seem like it for a few). This is a good foundation for the future.

The one thing that is different from the 16 to 10 team league is the fact there are fewer styles in the league. I always thought by having 16 meant you would see so many styles, it made the NCAA tourney easier because you had seen it all before.

RE: This season
Also another thing about the 16 vs 10- and saw it a bit in the story about PC's NCAA tourney appearance- with the 10, you have a chance to ultra prepare for each team and get quite a book on each team. With 16, you don't do that, and can move quicker in getting ready for each individual team. It's a small thing you would think, but I think in a tourney setting, it would make a difference.
