I miss the CCHA and the regional rivalries. Just my opinion. Loved going to see them play at U-M, MSU, Ferris, ND, etc. Cant get pumped about Duluth, Colorado College and many others. Sorry.
Not a huge hockey person, but I do follow our team.
I completely agree with this statement.
The CCHA was no longer an option.
Could you get Pumped about the two Alaska teams? Bemidji? Alabama Huntsville? Because that's who you'd be playing in the wcha. 3 of the 4 teams mentioned above we wouldn't have played regardless of which conference we went too.
Now there are rumors that notre dame and maybe Bg may join the nchc.
The wcha is a conference that teams will jump out of not into. . WMU is already in a conference like that with the rest of its sports.
I'm aware the CCHA wasn't an option.
Bemidji St. and Alabama-Huntsville are about as exciting as Colorado College and St. Cloud St. to the average person.
I agree.
I agree as well. But in the mean time we're at least playing some of the best teams in the country. We'll never get back the attendance bumps of having UM, MSU, or NOtre dame at lawson every year (unless Notre dame joins the NCHC as speculated). I'd wager that Denver, UND, St. Cloud, or UMD would bring similar attendance as LSSU, BG, or Ferris historically did when we played them regularly.

Winning cures all ills.
It does, but you either need to get better horses or get more out of the horses you have! Good teams can become great if you can get ordinary people to do extrodanary things!

Miami has adjusted... why haven't we by now?
Miami was a top team before the nchc.

Miami's hockey program has long been established as a consistent national power. Comparing our program to theirs over the past decade is apples-to-oranges.
A better comparison - one that could, long-term, potentially be used to make a strong case one way or the other in the NCHC/WCHA debate, would be comparing our program with Bowling Green's: both programs play in older facilities; both spent the better part of the final decade of the CCHA as doormats (obviously, we improved a lot in the last couple of years of the CCHA); one program went to the NCHC, while the other went to the WCHA.
BG had a pedestrian first year in the WCHA, but they've improved this year and are currently #14 in the Pairwise heading into the final week of the regular season. Even if BG manages to squeak into the NCAAs, I think it's impossible to determine which conference is the better fit based on a two-year sample. Five years or, even better, ten years down the road should provide a much greater sample size as to which path will appear to be the better one. (If BG were to join the NCHC at some point, Ferris could be used as a similar measuring stick.)

Posted for the heck of it
Whenever I'm feeling bad about one of our athletic programs I always think of this and feel a little better. It's possible this would have literally killed me if I were a Miami fan....

Well stated! I would have picked ferris as my example, but same analysis.
I will add this though. There was far less risk of killing the upward momentum of our program if we had gone with the wcha. Failing to immediatly succeed in the nchc leave you in the basement of a conference, which takes the spirit out of the fan base and players, and makes it tougher to recruit.
I sincerely believe that if we were in the wcha the last two years we would have had great likelihood of making the NCAA each season.
Just saying.......

I certainly see your viewpoint but regarding your ferris example... . They made the ncaa championship game towards the end of the ccha and now well below. 500 after joining the Wcha

I really feel for the Miami players and fans watching that again. The worst part IMO is the Miami goalie had no chance whatsoever on the tying and winning goals. Those players are going to take that game to their graves.

I don't think Ferris would necessarily be a bad comparison - for most of the final decade of the CCHA, they were a better program than us (and BG, for that matter). One reason I chose BG instead is because I think their arena is more similar to Lawson. If you haven't been to Ferris before, their arena is really small-time - one entire side of the arena doesn't have seating. I'd be surprised if Ferris is in a position to upgrade their facilities anytime soon. Like us, I think BG potentially could be at some point.
Two years, again, is too small a sample size to draw any conclusions, but I do disagree with the notion that WMU has been in the basement or been the Vanderbilt of the NCHC up to this point. It's early, but there should be little doubt that so far, Colorado College has clearly earned that distinction - hence all the anger about last week's outcomes.

I'm still trying to understand the overwhelming "sky is falling" commentary. Much like the men's bball team we were warned of a downturn this year. Personally I've seen quite a few positives along with the issues...
We back this up next year with another disasterous conference record pitted with discipline issues..I'll start to get a little concerned. I trust coach Murray and look forward to a clean slate in the NCHC tourney.
Side observation... It's been obvious this team struggles with the larger Olympic sheets ... Curious to see how we attack that glaring problem going forward.

And if knowing big guys are bad on big ice and we have teams in the league that play on big ice, shouldn't we adjust the type of players we need to better compete?

Coach Murray is all about the big player, with his "NHL" style of play. But we have some very selfish players that can't stay out of the box that need to be sat.

Nut, I would agree with the selfishness, so why are they not sat? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity according to Albert Einstein. Having said that, sometimes coaches also have to adjust. Complacency is a killer.

So who is at fault for that? The coach is the manager. Manage!
