You can't reason with a hater. In a Hater's mind, you are not allowed to say anything that may reflect a bad light on a past coach. He accuses everyone of throwing a past coach under the bus, while he attempts to drive a bulldozer over our present coach.

Yeah, I love how we're all homers and Keatts "got lucky" with seniors.

Yet, the Mullet says he's probably gone after this year to a better school.

You couldn't script the hilarity any better.

RE: 9 games in, 9 to play
He got lucky that they bought in and have stayed healthy to this point.Without them it could be very ugly and don't forget they play the game not the coach.I do think it is obvious he has done a good job and has some guys coming in that are supposed to be very good players.
I would not consider a contract right until the Peterson deal is off the books. You could end up paying two again to do one job.I thought Moss was the guy but he caught a few bad breaks and it was over.If the swinton kid styas in school and plays Benny might still be the coach here. Then you have Buzz the used car salesman-he had me going along with the rest of the area.Keatts is doing a good job but push back a little and let it play out.Giving a contract ext right now will not keep him here and everybody knows that but it could put UNCW on the hook again. If he gets a good offer he will leave and that means he did a good job so why put your neck on the chopping block?

UNCW took a chance on him when he zero experience so what makes you think it could not happen?
(01-30-2015 10:49 AM)82hawk Wrote:  I dont' see that any program that is a step up from us would take a chance on him after one year in a weak CAA conference. Also, they would realize we have a very top heavy upper class roster. They'd probably wait a few years to see if he could sustain the success. I always find it amusing that Mullet will say he could be gone after this year to a better school...but WE would make a mistake in extending his contract. If they would take a chance, why wouldn't we?

Typical nonsense from the tattoo hater.

Also, the idea of raising funds to keep him isn't a bad one, and there is nothing preventing it. The good news about winning and therefore more butts in the stands, is that Keatts contract has him sharing revenue based on attendance. "20 percent of season ticket sales revenue in excess of $185,000". No wonder he's addressing and thanking the crowd...smart man.

Not that I am supporting a contract extension just yet, but when Keatts leaves it will not be because he was fired. The bigger schools who come after him will have to satisfy the buyout clause.

Mullet, no one is saying extend his contract this year. We're saying preparing for it now, or for his departure in about 3 years, would be smart. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst kind of stuff.

Did you think Moss would be fired?Did you think Buzz would be fired?Learn from your mistakes or keep making them is all I am saying here.It is all going his way now and it was the same with Moss at one time and look at that dumpster fire. There is no reason to extend him anything right now.If they want him the buyout will not be an issue to a big school.

RE: 9 games in, 9 to play
Keatts' is signed through 2019. An extension helps in no way at all right now. If he stayed until then, he'd be at $400k+. If he's still doing well, he will be in a really good position. If you look at the pay for coaches in the CAA, he's already near the top. 400k+, in a location he likes, at a winning program isn't a bad place to be. He seems to like being close to home, so my biggest concern is a move into Virginia. VaTech, ODU, and don't count out VCU if Smart moves on for some reason.

I may be wearing Teal colored glasses, but our pay has improved dramatically since the Brownell days, and he can live pretty well on 400k+ here. What if he stays, even if he is winning?

Once again, I didn't say I supported an extension just yet.

I'm more concerned that any contract has a buyout clause.

I'm just happy this is our biggest worry right now. "Are we playing so well that our coach might leave for a major program?"

That's a damn good problem to have compared to the last several years.

Exactly. I think we're still in shell shock over it so much because of Brownell. But when a coach leaves on his own terms, the program doesn't have to suffer like that. Keatts is trying to improve the whole program, not just the W's and L's, but getting people and businesses behind this team. If he succeeds in such an overhaul by the time he's done here, whichever coach he (hopefully) hand-picks as his successor will be in a great situation.

I agree. A lot of people have forgotten how successful the handoff was between Wainright and Brownell. That Brownell issue was a university administration and AD screw up.

The exiting coach really doesn't have the final say in who would replace him. Hopefully the admin will listen and make the right choice. Free of any politics.

It was more than a screwup. And it also involved some donors who had their own agendas.

RE: 9 games in, 9 to play
I think most of are aware that Coach Keatts is the real deal and that we would have to be very lucky to keep him for the duration of his current contract. That's just life as a mid-major and you have to embrace it. As SN08 and CoastGuardHawk have already said, the key is in building a tradition that can lead to smooth transition to the next coach without losing players or momentum. For now, let's simply enjoy the moment and be grateful for what we have!

Yeah, I've gone "mildly" soft in my old age.
