Wake and UNC schedule home and home
Well, it's come down to this: UNC and Wake Forest have scheduled a home and home non-conference series with each other.

North Carolina and Wake Forest have scheduled a home-and-home football series. At Wake Sept 14, 2019, at UNC Sept 25, 2021.
It's bad enough that they're doing this, but what makes it worse is the fact that they are scheduling it out 5 years in advance.

Don't know why this doesn't happen more often.

Unless I am missing something, these two are both in the ACC. So now they will play a non-conference game (one that doesn't effect conference standings) and possibly a conference game that same season? Weird.

Scheduling this series almost 5 years in advance - does that mean WF and UNC think there will not be "championship game deregulation", and they're assuming that they're stuck with the existing ACC divisions, in which they are not division rivals?

Well, as Stewart Mandel pointed out, if they didn't do this UNC and Wake wouldn't play each other for seven years. They won't play a conference game against each other in those years.

After this season UNC & Wake wouldn't have faced each other for another seven years on conference schedule.
That said, could this move be a bellcow that the ACC/XII legislation to deregulate CCG requirements is not poised to pass?

Happened once in the Big West, some mix of Nevada, Utah State, and NMSU can't recall but they played a non-conference game against a conference team.
When Idaho and NMSU was sent off to a short purgatory of independence I didn't understand why they didn't schedule home/home in the same year, NFL style.

I assume it means they would reconsider if the NCAA and ACC change rules about divisions. I also think it means that they are both realistic enough to realize that the chances that they would have a rematch in the ACC CCG are remote enough to ignore.

Many teams in the Big Sky do that in years that they don't play each other in the Conference. With 13 teams and only 8 conference games, you miss 4 teams a year (with the schedules on a three year cycle).

Why couldn't the B12 do this?

The Big 12 has "one true champion" so its not needed.

The ACC schedules in non-division rotation years in advance. UNC and Wake are not scheduled to meet in conference in either of those years. I would expect this might spur NC State and Duke to follow suit. Both of these schools have exceptionally weak (and unattractive) non-conference schedules. Playing each other instead of some SBC team nobody wants to see makes a ton of sense.

Why would they want to? They already play every other team in the conference.

I think that this is a beautifully creative move on Wake Forest's part. It preservers a local rivalry, allows the fan bases more opportunity to see games, and cuts down having to play so many games from mid majors, helping strength of schedule.
If this trend increases, the number of buy games should decrease a lot. There will be losers, for sure. Mid majors will see the number of opportunities for home and homes vastly decreased. But the overall increase in enthusiasm among the major college fanbases are well worth it.

I guess my question would be- does this fufill the p5 requirement for UNC and Wake Forest for those years?

Especially since with the current configuration of only playing twice every 12 years. I would be happy if NCSU and Duke were to follow suit. Basically home games for each team. In addition, it also qualifies as a P5 game. I hope this doesn't happen but I could see NCSU and UNC use this as out to play ECU once the contracts expire. I hope it does not happen, I think it is a great rivalry and game for the region. The every three year rotation works good.

It is a chicken-bleep requirement if it does. For example, I would be more impressed by UNC scheduling a good Boise or BYU home and home vs. 2-10 Wake Forest team.

I'd like to hope that the ECU games make so much sense that they'll continue despite this development. They are always going to be sellouts and attractive regional TV games. How much more attractive would NC State's schedule be next year if Duke and ECU replaced Troy and South Alabama?

This is why these damn conferences do not make any sense. The BE and the Pac10 had it right. Play everyone in your conference and have a winner. All these title games are stupid. Too much luck of the draw.
I wish there were more power leagues and less 12-14 team leagues along with an 8 team playoff. That would be a better fan experience. You would actually keep regional games and rivalries!
