Hey - maybe the New York Giants could play the Philadelphia Eagles in a "non-division" game.

That beats the Giants having to play the Oakland Raiders or the St. Louis Rams.

RE: McMurphy: UNC & Wake Forest schedule "nonconference" home & home in FB
When Wake Forest was located in Wake County NC (they were moved to Winston Salem by R J Reynolds Tobacco - similar to Duke being moved from Trinity NC to Durham by the Duke Tobacco family), you had NC State, UNC, Duke, and Wake Forest all located within 30 miles of one another - Duke and UNC as close as 8 miles. Wake was not in the precursor to the Southern Conference - they were too small, but we played them anyway. When the 13 SEC teams moved out of the Southern Conference, Wake was the first asked to join the So-Con in 1937 which put them in the same conference as UNC, NC State, MD, VT, Clemson, and South Carolina. We used to play two particular basketball tournaments first the Dixie Classis and later the Big 4 where Wake, UNC, Duke, and NC State first played outside top teams, then later on just the four.

Expansion has killed all that. One of the byproducts of Wake's physical move to Winston was to establish a relationship with VT decades before VT got back in with the group in 2003. As it is now, Wake has neither UNC or VT on a regular basis.

This smells to me as if it is an attempt to create leverage in said negotiations.

The correct solution is to remove the division requirement for the conference championship game, and then go to a 3/5 format where each team has 3 fixed rivals:

Duke - UNC, NCSU, Wake
UNC - Duke, Wake, NCSU
NCSU - Wake, Duke, UNC
Wake - NCSU, UNC, Duke

BC - MIA, PITT, SYR
CU - GT, UVA, FSU
FSU - UL, MIA, CU
GT - CU, UL, VPI
UL - FSU, GT, PITT
MIA - BC, FSU, UVA
PITT - SYR, BC, UL
SYR - PITT, VPI, BC
UVA - VPI, CU, MIA
VPI - UVA, SYR, GT

If the ACC goes to nine games not counting Notre Dame, everyone could lock in two more fixed rivals, and still play everyone home and away over four years. Coincidentally it would allow everyone to have Miami or Florida State as one of their fixed rivals, giving everyone at least 3 games in 4 years in the state of Florida. The same could also be done with Virginia and Virginia Tech.

I bet you somebody could come up with a plan for rotating divisions that accomplishes the same thing.

Finally Carolina and Wake Forest have found a way to undo some of the wrongs brought about by realignment and actually make it work.
Carolina played it's very first football game against Wake Forest in 1888 and have played the Deacs over 100 times. It's too good a rivalry to let separate divisions stand in the way.
It's a great move by Wake and Carolina.

I don't agree that this is a "leverage" thing on the 8/9 schedule. It's a legitimate issue for the two, just as NC State and Duke not playing each year is an issue.

It actually being a legitimate issue for them only makes it an easier maneuver to swallow in terms of actually pulling the trigger.

I'm very happy for both UNC & WF. P5 Autonomy should mean never having to say you're sorry...

I'm glad the schools have finally decided to do this. Personally, I hope it's just the beginning and we add UNC to the schedule every year that they're not on the conference slate. That would fix the one big issue Wake has had with ACC expansion.

This game will not replace an FCS game for us, but will take the spot we usually give to Vanderbilt.

This game is a guaranteed sell out for Wake and was a big loss when it went away.

Smart move by both schools. Wouldn't surprise me to see more of this in other P5 leagues soon.

Depends on what's important to you. Surprised preserving rivalries and seeing opponents you actually care about isn't a higher priority for a lot college football fans.

Realignment proved rivalries no longer matter to many schools.

I wouldn't be opposed to Ohio State doing this at all. My personal preference would be Illinois to preserve the Illibuck trophy, but more realistically it could be someone like Wisconsin. That said, I think our allotted road non-conference games for the next several years are pretty much used up so it would be a ways off.

When you change to 9 conference games, that should help out a bit.

Then what the ACC should do is the there is a min of 8 conference games and ACC schools have the flexibility to schedule a 9th conference game if desired. Just don't call it a OOC when its not.

What you're suggesting would invite someone to game the system and create tension between schools in the conference.

Playing a rivalry game that doesn't count towards the standings seems the only fair way to do this. If we want to see the game bad enough, then it shouldn't matter if it counts towards the conference standings.

We used to do this with all the Tobacco Road schools in basketball a lot. It was called the "Big Four Tournament" and was incredibly popular in this state. Personally I'd like to that brought back as well.

Out of curiosity, why do you care what teams in the ACC do or don't do? How does this affect you? Are you afraid your favorite conference might also see it as a good idea?

Does affect me personally? No. But, they fact that a conference tries to pass this as an OOC is silly and stupid. And rightly, they need to know how silly the ACC looks trying to pass a conference game as one that isn't.

They just mean it won't count towards the ACC standings. I don't think they're trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes.

@BrentAxeMedia he said he spoke with the Syracuse AD last night. Probably in early, very early, talks.
