I'm trying. Sometimes I slip though. It's a nasty habit.

Fortunately the leaders responsible for putting us at that crossroads are gone, and they aren't coming back, though maybe some should be visited with tar and feathers for the grief they caused.

Oh, I agree. I would just say, make sure you include Shelby Freeloader Thames in that number. By the time Aunt Martha, General Hammond, Pappy Butterface, etc. showed up, our fate was largely determined already. We'd already been left out of the Big East at least twice. The talent level of the football team had already declined. Stadium expansion had already fizzled and then been reborn in midget form, the IHL was already pissed at us (Thames tried to cheat our enrollment numbers into the #1 spot), etc.

The rot began with Thames, and it's been an uphill climb since. Second place goes to Richard Giannini, a man who did a great job except for his complete lack of ambition and respect for USM.

It tires me to go back through the litany, but you have covered all that need to be included. I do have faith in both Bennett and McGillis, something I never could muster for any of the above-mentioned leaders.

I question anyones reasoning who can call ST a freeloader. All you have to do is look at the new buildings on campus that were triggered under his administration. I dare say under him we would not be in the mess we are in today.
Martha had some very good things at the academic end. Yes her athletic decisions stunk and we are paying thru the nose for multiple hires she made.
I am personally grateful she got the anesthesia school here. My oldest is half way thru the program and will be able to do what he has wanted since a kid and do it with a doctorate instead of a masters degree.

Other than the play, how was your night, Mrs. Lincoln?

"Freeloader" was a joke. His middle name was Freeland.

Good point about the anesthesiology doctorate.

USM has a rich history of winning.

Time to suck it up and get back in the fight.

Maybe when you guys get down on the program it would be healthier to think what CUSA would be if USM had never been in it, rather than when you will contribute to making it great.

USM was the program I was most excited to be in conference with when we joined. It was the one name that made people refrain from calling CUSA a bad conference, saying "well at least there's Southern Miss."

You guys kept it going through the transition into CUSA 2.0 after getting passed over for the move up. This time you need a little help from some of your peers to keep it all from going to **** while you get your house in order.

It happens to every program. Alabama flat sucked for a lot of years. Look at Florida now compared to 10 years ago. Not to say we're in that company but some bad decisions put Marshall into a 7-8 year tailspin and we were not used to losing for the previous 20 years.

You'll be back and the rest of us will keep the light on for you.

easily one of the better 'reasoned' posts I've read from another conference member.....

the same reason you were 'excited' about southern miss is the same time frame we basically sat on our arse and missed out on a marketing opportunity....

it's going to be interesting to see the how the 'convert the yurt' proposal plays out....

some were getting pissed about the lack of info to date (pick me).....now instead of a 'plan with a completion date' we are going to be presented with an architectural 'proposal'.....why do the masses need to hear this phase? Are we really that 'poor' at soliciting funds to meet an agenda other than being able to fire a dipshite coach after a year? I'm just scratching my head with this methodology.

yep, to the boys that mentioned, 'we would eat our words'......still gonna be waiting.....and waiting......and waiting.......and waiting......and waiting.......................................................................................

You answered your own question right there.

We also spent a good part of the day yesterday discussing how that screwy town operates and how a chunk of our fan base will turn on somebody if their collective hineys aren't being patted.

So, yeah, we could wait to make a public announcement once all the "i"s are dotted and "t"s are crossed. The renderings could be kept on the down-low and only shown to the various public officials and prospective donors who'll pick up the tab. You know what happens if McGillis does that, though? A non-stop barrage of message board threads, Facebook chatter, and letters to the editor of the American bemoaning how the process isn't "transparent," the "regular fan" is being neglected, and there's no progress actually being made because nothing's been presented for public consumption.

It's a damned if you do/damned if you don't proposition. People are gonna find something to b___h about no matter which way you go.

the injuns are pretty restless right now.....if people didn't post on a bbs or other format, IMO, that would be an even larger concern....dialogue from the fan base is a positive in my opinion....kinda shows 'we' still care....there is always going to be the '*****-core' portion of any fan base....it's no different than the group that responds with hopeful and helpful potential solutions.

...and this town can definitely be a 'queer' lot.....

Big Mac stated this would be a priority upon his hiring. It concerns me to release a proposal w/o the funding details and a completion date. Maybe the masses will view this sales pitch as a positive.....maybe it will be viewed as more smoke and mirror promises....time will tell...

I will say that whatever the end result is, I hope we find the funding to do it correctly.....I am all-in for a major upgrade of the right kind.....half-ass doesn't cut it anymore....just like camping on our laurels

I have always been of the opinion 'build it, they will come' and have posted that sentiment for years.....

I'll sit back and wait until next week.....like I said, it's going to be interesting....

Does everyone really think McG is just throwing this out there to appease the group who clammer for information to be shared? If you really believe that then you have not watched how this man operates since his arrival.
You wont hear it next week, but if he is going to this step of the process hes more than pretty damn sure he has a major funding component worked out already.

No....I am not "pretty damn sure".....that was the point....

if one has funding, why not lay that out in conjunction.....makes no cents to me....

reminds me of uab's 'announcement'.....there were many here that knew what 'that' meant....

questioning 'process' does not equal a negative....

gonna say it again.....I'll just sit back and wait....gonna be interesting....

You won't find a more gracious post on any BBS board... Looks like good sportsmanship is alive & well.
One thing of note...Every program - particularly the mids - are one bad coach away from going sideways.
Appreciate your sentiments, sure many other USM fans do as well.

You won't find a more gracious post on any BBS board... Looks like good sportsmanship is alive & well.
One thing of note...Every program - particularly the mids - are one bad coach away from going sideways.
Appreciate your sentiments, sure many other USM fans do as well.

I think we've always known 'that'.....that is what made many enjoy watching the decades go by....

that day is over for us.....it was a fun ride while she lasted....now it's time to plan for prosper if it makes cents....me thinks it does....always have

we have to invest to stay competitive or sit back and further enjoy fishing, grandkids, and golf type days .... those 'boys' will come and so will the recruits....it's today's world that mandates new construction....it's all these kids see with narrow eyes....

I didn't write the rules.....but it is what it is....

I choose to look backwards to gain an understanding of what not to do regarding our situation.....

we are getting better.....we don't need to stop trying now....we already tried that method....

pick your poison....

You wont hear it next week, but if he is going to this step of the process hes more than pretty damn sure he has a major funding component worked out already.

Another thing...Whether the major private donors are already lined up or not, it's a given we'll seek some public funding. Putting these plans out there for everyone to see gives the public something to get behind. The more people who see these plans and buy into them, the more pressure they'll put on their county supervisors, mayor, state representative, etc., to make it happen.

Good gosh, we added the new team facilities when Eustachy was here, but the arena itself has barely had more than a coat of paint and some new drywall in 5 decades. It's gotta start somewhere. Hell, I'd take a sketch on the back of a napkin at this point.
