In the most general terms no matter how darn good NIU is, we are not Wisconsin and he will not be competing against Badger level talent at NIU. He has so many more opportunities to succeed athletically at NIU than he would at Wisconsin.

Don't overthink this post. I understand every situation is different and things may turn out just for him at Wisconsin and he could have failed spectacularly at NIU. I just firmly believe too many kids of good but still marginal talent are blinded by the bright lights of Big Time Football and cannot see that they would have better playing opportunities at Almost Big Time Football, or even Not Big Time Football. I am speaking from experience, here.
On the other hand, Ben Niemann played at Iowa as a true freshman and is listed as their starter at OLB right now and if he came to NIU he would neither have played last year or be listed as a starter at LB. In general I get your point, but you have to keep in mind no kid is going to think he's going to sit on the bench. They're likely where they are right now largely because of confidence.

You're a major Hare injury this year or next year away from riding with Maddie and Ryan Graham. And coming 2017 you only have two scholarship QBs, neither of which I think anyone here expects to be the guy. They need to recruit 3-4 QBs next year, one of which wouldn't hurt if it was a Juco.

Commit next year, redshirt the year after, compete for the starting job as a redshirt in 2017.

For all we know Graham and Santa will be monsters but a little more depth would definitely be nice. The coaches may have to bring in a JUCO QB at some point to fill the gap. Kimble flipping a couple of years back hurt our depth too. He is at Eastern illinois now by the way. Is Mack Waldman on the team this spring? I'm pretty sure he was enrolled at NIU last fall.

If Ingold does indeed switch, this will be a problem for us no doubt. We better not be in a position where we have a redshirt freshman starting for us in a couple years. What I don't want is for us to now recruit some run of the mill unrated QB to help fill his slot. Given our success with dual threat QB's our expectation should be for us to recruit legitimate 3* QB athletes to come play here.

RE: QB Ingold Offered by Wisconsin
He is a young kid and this is a potential move either way that could affect the rest of his life (professionally and educationally). I'm not upset either way with him. I wish him the best and hope that he gets the education that helps him move on after college. That is what this is about.

I hated NIU my first year. Wanted nothing more than to be at U of I. Now I live and breathe red. I got an education that has benefitted me 1000 times over and I hope he does the same!

Edit; What I'm trying to say is that it's hard to know what you want at 17-18. Lol. Sorry.

This is why I don't pay attention to recruiting. Well this and the fact that we keep having "terrible" classes yet keep doing work in the games.

Its like playing the stock market and comparing your profits and losses to the guy sitting next to you or the guy in the mansion on the hill. You aren't going to "win" per se, you are just better off focusing on what you know, doing it right and making sure it pans out the way you've done so in the past.

Gonna need to recruit QBs hard next year.

Interesting that it took Wisconsin this long to offer. Maybe their recruiting isn't going that well. Probably a tough decision for the kid.

While I definitely agree its true for 90% of NIU's schedule, I am afraid we saw in the Marshall game what that next level up athlete can do for you.

That's a strange comment when you consider Lynch and Harnish were both 2 stars who only had offers from NIU.

My point is that they have now elevated the program to a level where we should be able to recruit a higher caliber of athlete.

I get how recruiting classes are a gamble and can be terrible, but in this case, especially at this school, Quarterback is the most important position. We better have a good one back there and better recruit well at the position, or we will not seem the same level of success we have recently.

Given our success, our expectations as fans should be for an increasing level of recruiting every year at this school. They have a lot of tools, Yordan, CPC, TV appearances, etc. that we can now sell that we couldn't just a few years back.

Hope that UW is being honest with Ingold in terms of his opportunity for playing time as they have 24 commits already per ESPN with 2 OLB & 2 ILB plus a QB.

I get it, it's his dream school but who wouldn't rather go where your chance for PT is better. NIU has no other QB committed in this class and if he and the team decide it's better for him to play OLB, NIU has only 1 commitment at that position in this class.

+1. Plus our success rate for qb's the last 5-6 years is pretty darn good.

Ingold is far guaranteed a staring QB job here, but is guarnteed an opportunity to compete at QB. He is far from a finished product. Hope he stays with us,buy if he doesn't it won't stress me. I am far more concerned losing an OLineman. That would hurt.

"Chryst's recent actions show that we can expect the famous "fence around Wisconsin" to be there as long as he is the head man in Madison."

"Sources close to both Hughes and Ingold have told Scout they expect them to take the Badger offers."

Interestingly, we offered 2016 OL recruit Cole Van Lanen yesterday and shortly after we offered Wisconsin followed with an offer. It is going to be tougher to pull talent out with Chryst there.

With guys who actually get on the field to me. It's funny to see people say "he'll never play at Wisconsin" and then just assume he'll stroll onto campus and play here. NIU is a damn good program and getting on the field here isn't easy.

McIntosh was the Indiana player of the year and Maddie was a 3 star with a lot of offers and neither can get on the field much at QB. Root was a 3 star and I think Matt Williams was pretty highly regarded too. Hare was probably the least highly regarded of McIntosh, Maddie, and Williams and look who ends up being the guy.

Hell, Deion Hallmon had like 45 offers and he couldn't get on the field last year.

No doubt about it; but not only does Wisky have a highly regarding recruit verbally committed at QB; they also have 4 LB verbals as well (2 ILB, 2 OLB).
It can't be fun to put in all the work required as a scholarship player and hardly ever see the field as he looks to be down the depth chart in both positions at Wisconsin.

Didn't someone have a quote on Hughes from yesterday that said the offer hasn't changed his commitment to NIU?

That was somebody else I believe.

It was Hughes. It's in another thread where things are relatively rational.
