RE: Applewhite
The transfer info is dated 12/18/2014 (yesterday) so it may be accurate news. Coach K has said he expects to recruit one more player for next year so this may be the scholarship that is freeing up. Most likely Dre realized he will not get much playing time so he will go to a lower level where he can actually play.

RE: Applewhite
I'm still scratching my head on this one? Right away he should take minutes away from Hall and possibly rotate with Lauf and maybe Drummond depending if his skills lean towards a guard or power forward? Next year we loose Witherspoon and Drummond, so he's probably a starter the next two years. It will be interesting to see if there is truth to this rumor.

I think Angel Aprecio's minutes on the bench are pretty safe, so no threat there. Angel is averaging 38.97 minutes on the sidelines and is too valuable in holding down a seat to bring him into a game. We wouldn't want to break his rhythm of sitting and standing during timeouts and halftime.

Angel and I have a lot in common. We both dress up for the games. We both cheer. We both sit a lot during the games with the occasional burst of emotion. Our college ppg average is the same 0.00. I do have the edge in one category. I caught a t-shirt at the last game so my rebounding average is slightly above his.

FWIW, have heard that another incoming mid year transfer is a possibility. Hopefully this will pan out better....

Question: If he has sat out the required semester but then never plays in a game for UT AND officially transfers before the actual start of the next semseter, does he still have to sit out another semester if he transfers to another D-1 school?

OFFICIAL

TOLEDO, OH — Sophomore guard Dre Applewhite (Memphis, TN) is leaving the Rocket basketball program, Toledo Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk announced today.

Applewhite came to Toledo in January 2014 following a year-and-a-half at Mississippi State and had sat out the past year due to NCAA Division I transfer regulations.

The Rockets (6-4) are on a season-high four-game win streak and in action this weekend with a matchup at McNeese State (5-3) in Lake Charles, LA on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (CT).

****We need to bring in a 6-8 stud JUCO power forward.

****This is the curse of Jordan Mincy. Got out of town as fast a he could. Recruited Applewhite-blew up. Recruited Kamu Stokes-blew up.

This may hurt more next year than this year. We're pretty deep with 6'3", 6'4", 6'5" wing-type guys.

As far as the Rockets' bench not providing offensive punch, the solution seems simple. Start Lauf and have J. Williams come off the bench. Playing with the starters, Lauf's offensive mediocrity will not be a problem. Playing with the bench, Williams will provide a spark. The reason our bench lacks offensive firepower is that Coach K starts his five best offensive players. A lot of teams don't do that.

this isn't going to hurt at all. We do need to become more athletic at the 4 and 5 though. Adway should help some, but could use another 6'7" to 6'10" athletic player to rebound and block shots/protect the rim.

RE: Applewhite
The blade article mentions a quote by Coach K that Applewhite did not have a spot on the 10 man rotation and rightfully so, the kid isn't eligible to play yet. You would think it would take some game tape and him getting his game legs before locking down a spot in the rotation. It's also interesting that the reporter knows that Applewhite didn't get along with the coaching staff, everything we heard coming in was nothing short of a glowing reputation. It must have been really bad situation, because now he has to sit out until 2016 and he was willing to take that risk. Holy cripes, maybe his grandkids will see him play?

I guess it's not really a loss since he never set foot on the floor. It's just disappointing since there was some excitement getting an SEC transfer and the the hope that he might bring a more mature outlook to the team. He appeared to have a MAC type, athletic body and maybe he was going to be that last piece of the puzzle that could have helped us get to the NCAA. What a flake, why would another coach take a chance on him?

RE: Applewhite
crazy, he's now spent 3 years in college and played half of one. unless he goes to a small college, he won't finish his first year of college ball until the end of his senior yr. these are still kids. weatherspoon was a bit of goofball when he transferred in, but has grown into himself and become a mature guy. the program is graduating a lot of guys who seem to have their sh*t together more or less, but not every 20 year old will.

on the other hand, the team seems to be gelling. some of it is the competition, but i really like the quicker ball movement and passing. we are playing more like we did last year on offense. meanwhile, the half court man d is looking better. again, need to see it against good teams, but at least some improvement.

roster wise, we have a great class coming in. likely, coach k's best so far. the returning core will be less fun to watch without juice and weatherspoon, but is a solid core.

All of this is so strange. I am 99.9% sure he was on the bench at the Robert Morris game, then two days later, he's gone.

If (just an "if" here) he was not eligible for the second semester, then his departure doesn't surprise me. I agree with others who have said transferring to a Div. 2 school would make sense with his situation. Without a waiver, he doesn't have much Div. 1 eligibility remaining.

What "next" coach is going to tie up a schollie for a senior citizen. He barely helps your team and is basically one and done. Who needs the headache and his baggage. Like the new coach isn't going to call coach k to get the scoop.

He was there, Mr. Sensitive. In Fact he stood with the team for the post-game playing of the alma mater.
